Hi everyone, I hope you're all well.
For those of you who aren't familiar with me already my name is Kate,
it's lovely to meet you and I'm a travel vlogger on YouTube.
Whenever I go anywhere new I love to take my camera with me and capture everything that I see.
The aim of my filming is that I'll eventually be able to turn the footage
into an interesting video that looks totally effortless,
but in fact it's not as easy as some of you are maybe imagining it to be.
So today I'm going to share with you some of my tips for vlogging your vacation.
This video has been inspired by the Google Local Guides team,
some of whom are currently putting together their video applications
for a spot at this year's Local Guide summit.
If that's how you found this video I wish you the best of luck with your application
and hopefully you find these tips helpful.
So let's start with the basics - equipment.
If you're going to make a YouTube video, you need something to film your video on.
You might have a video camera, like what I'm using today.
You might have a compact camera that has a video function on it.
You might just have your phone or tablet. Any of those is totally fine.
There are some people who say that you need to have expensive equipment
in order to make a YouTube video
and while it can be true that the quality is a little bit better,
what's more important is that you know how to use your device.
I know some people who make travel vlogs just with their mobile phone and they turn out totally fine.
If you do have a drone, it would be cool if you included some footage from that,
but if you don't that's fine as well. I don't have a drone!
When filming outside the best lighting is the wonder that is natural light.
And yes, the irony of saying that at 1am when I'm sat indoors is not lost on me.
When natural light isn't available,
going into a well-lit area is probably advised for best results.
When filming outside try to be aware of the sounds going on around you.
If the street sounds noisy, raise your voice.
Sometimes when I'm filming scenery instead of my own face,
I put my mouth closer to the microphone to make sure I'm definitely going to be heard.
Strong wind can also be picked up on camera and it can do weird things to your microphone.
So if you think that you may not have been heard above the sounds of the weather,
try saying it again or moving to a different spot just in case.
The best vlogs have a good combination of narrative and scenery.
It's important to show what is happening around you, but don't forget to tell the story too.
There are people on YouTube who search for travel vlogs
so that they can get helpful advice before they visit the same place themselves.
So what I like to do is I like to share with them my observations.
If I find that the climate is colder than I thought it would be
or I really wish I'd brought a pair of sunglasses with me, then I make sure to mention it in the vlog.
Or if I've had a tip from my tour guide on how to save my phone's battery, I mention that as well
because these are things that I wish I'd known as a traveler myself.
This helps the video to be so much more helpful for future travelers,
especially if they never visited the area before.
I hope these tips have inspired you
and maybe even convinced you to try making a travel vlog of your own?
If they have I wish you the best of luck
and don't forget to comment down below with your thoughts and your questions.
Thanks again for watching everybody, cheerio!
