I had been married for eight years and on Thanksgiving Day
my ex-husband told me he wanted a divorce.
It was shattering.
It wasn't expected. No warning signs. It kind of put a damper on the season.
I continued to function, but I had my sisters from church who came and checked
on me regularly, and made sure that I wasn't alone, but Christmas was right
around the corner and Christmas is my favorite season.
I hadn't even put up my tree. There were no decorations in the house at all, and I
mentioned it to my Relief Society president and she said "I'm gonna come
over and we're gonna decorate your tree." And so she came over with my two
ministering sisters and another friend, and the five of us played Christmas
carols and put my tree up about ten days before Christmas so that I had a
tree my first Christmas without my now ex-husband. It was life-saving for me.
I've been blessed with lovely visiting teachers my whole life, but this
last set of ministering sisters, well the set that I had during this time of my
life, had already been coming to me for a while and they were my friends, and I
loved them, and so when things went terribly wrong all of a sudden, and I was
all by myself in Oklahoma with no family, they all stepped in. And I didn't just
have one or two ministering sisters. Everybody in the ward just rallied
around me and loved me, and I had phone calls and I had dinner invitations and I
spent Christmas morning at my bishop's house and I felt loved in the midst of
heartbreak. And so my ministering sisters were my whole ward family, and it
was an incredible blessing. Even though I'm divorced now I'm not alone. This
ministering experience showed me just how loved
I am by people who had only known me for two years and they welcomed me into
their families, and into their hearts, and into their homes and it made me a better
person and now I try to replicate that and serve others the same way I was
served, because it really blessed my life.
