Coffee Meetings - Duration: 7:04.

So the technique I'm going to share with you today about creating relationships

is something that I work with a number of executives with. Last week I had you

create a list of 15 target companies that you believe you would be

a great fit working for. Maybe it was based upon the values that that company

had, the mission statement, you know in conjunction with your own values. But you

came up with a list of 10 to 15 target companies. Today what I want you to do is

come up with a list of about 20 to 25 individuals who you believe can be most

influential in your job search. Now, the neighbor that's on the one side

of you who is 68 years old, no longer in the work force,

you know spends a lot of time in his or her garden. That's not an individual

that's gonna be influential in your job search. The person on the other side of

your house or apartment, that may very well be a person who could be

influential if they're working with a company like Xerox. Maybe

they're a lab technician. Maybe they're a project manager or someone in middle

management. You're not asking these individuals for a job, so relax right now.

You're not gonna be asking this person for a job. You're not even going to be

asking them for a referral. This is how I want you to approach these individuals.

Your first step is to get out your resume.

You're gonna update your resume. You're gonna polish it up because it probably

hasn't been touched for a while. Or maybe, if it's really fortunate, you've just had

your resume professionally updated. But what I want you to do is I want you to

start reaching out to one of these individuals. Maybe the person's name is

Bob. "Hey Bob, it's been a long time. I hope you're doing well.

Hey, I wanted to share something with you. I am currently out of the workforce. I

just updated my resume or I just had my resume professionally done, and although

it looks good to me I'm looking for some second some third,

some even fourth opinions, and I'm reaching out to some people that I know

who know me and I was wondering if I could just spend 15 no more than 20

minutes of your time. I'll buy you a cup of coffee. I just really would appreciate

feedback on my resume. I want to see if I am leaving anything off? Do I

need to change something? Am I telling the story well enough?" Let me share

something with you - a little secret. Most people, not everyone, but most people

have an innate desire to help others. You're not asking this person for a job.

You're not asking them for a referral. You're simply asking them to take a look

at your resume and spend a little bit of time catching up. You'll buy them a cup of

coffee. A lot of people are gonna say yes to this. You will be surprised this is

something I'm hearing repeatedly from the clients that I work with. Most of

them are gonna say yes to this. They want to help you out. So you meet with them.

You have some coffee. You're going over this, you're listening to their feedback

and at the end you pull out your list of target companies and you just show them

and say, "these are the target companies that I'm going after, what do you think?"

You know what, this is what I found. If any of these individuals know someone at

the target company they're probably gonna say it without you even asking, "hey

do you happen to know anybody that works at these companies?" They're gonna look at

and say, "you know, I actually know someone that works at XYZ company." And then you

can ask is it okay if I use your name or just drop it - not even as a referral,

but is it okay if I drop your name as I reach out. You may be thinking

to yourself, well you know it's a long shot that any one of these

individuals are gonna know someone at one of these target companies, but you

know what? That's likely not true. I do an exercise with my clients in which we go

through Data.com or will use LinkedIn, and we'll find a company

that is within one of the industries that they're very interested in

pursuing. And it would be a company that neither of us have even heard of before.

I'll bring it up on LinkedIn, find the company on LinkedIn and I'll look at

the employees that work at this company. And well over 95 percent of the time,

well over 95 percent of the time, I will have multiple second connections at that

company. Meaning that although I don't know anyone directly at the company, I

know someone who does know someone at that company. This is what you're

going to find when you start having these coffee meetings. You're gonna find

that often one of these individuals you're having coffee with will know

one or more people at these 10 or 15 target companies. it's a great way into

connecting with someone through LinkedIn and saying, "Hey I just recently had

coffee with so-and-so and he suggested that I reach out and

connect with you as I'm very interested in this company. You can create your own script, but this is a way to start using second connections

which are the most important. It's not your first connections, it's your second

connections that are most important in your job search. You know, for example you

might have fifty-seven connections on LinkedIn but if you're connected with me

I have almost a thousand. There's a lot of people out there that I know that

I myself may be able to introduce you, if I knew you. So again, it's not your

first connections, it's your second connections that are most important and

one of the best ways to develop this is by the use of having coffee meetings. Get

that list of individuals who you believe will be most influential in your job

search and start connecting with them. Use your resume as the talking point by

offering to buy them some coffee. Sit down for 15-20 minutes and catch up. So I

hope you found this video informative and useful, and if so, make sure that you

do subscribe to this channel as I do upload a career strategy tip every

Tuesday. And if you are in the process of interviewing, make sure that you look at

the notes section below as I do have a link to a free download, "The top five

interview questions that any hiring manager wants to know about you" and the

best practice answers for those questions. Thank you so much, and I will

see you in the next video

Storytelling with Fab - Fabio Marrama Drinks Coffee With Kyles | 014 - Duration: 10:01.

[Fabio] Yasss! It's a good day today. My name is Fabio and I'm on Coffee With Kyle's.

[Kyles] Cheers. [Fabio] Cheers. [Kdub] So Fabio, how do you take your coffee?

[Fabio] Double-double man here in Canada. Double-double. Double-double at Tim Horton's is

what you would normally say. Just go up there "Double-double". Two cream

Two sugar. [KB] Nice. [Fabio] That's a signature at Tim Hortons. You just double-double, and that's it. [KB] Love it, man.

So Fab, what are you the most obsessed with in your professional life, right now, in two words?

[Fabio] Two words? I'm gonna say telling stories. And the reason I say that is

because that applies to both my career, so whether it's as a

partner specialist in marketing and branding, or on the personal side of

things, whether it's on LinkedIn or you know speaking to students, what have you.

Everything is about stories. Telling stories, talking about how it relates to

other people and that's one of the things I just love because when you tell

stories who can relate to it so yeah everything I do is is telling stories

and getting people to connect with the journey that I'm on and as well as myself with

theirs. [Kdub] That's awesome man. So when did you realize that you were an avid

storyteller? [Fabio] I don't even know like it was I would say probably it hasn't been

that long but I'm gonna say I've always enjoyed stories and I took a course here

here in Hamilton on storytelling and it was part of a leadership certificate

through the university, McMaster University, and took leadership and

innovation and on the leadership stream there was a really good course on is

this storytelling and I just loved it and one of the instructors said she

was such a great storyteller and such a good speaker and she said I have

probably about 80 stories in my back pocket that I've memorized that I like I

can pick out no matter where I'm speaking and I just

I can take one and I apply it to whatever the topic is and I just mold

that story, that past experience, childhood, whatever it is and I take that

that story and I can mold it to whatever speaking engagement it is different

topics and I can relate it and she said a lot of people don't realize it's

not just telling stories on a whim that people prepare them and they know them

and I was it that's so interesting so I really I love that I love that course

and I really started to think about marketing in the modern day like 2018

and how important storytelling is and and showcasing your brand in a way that

people can connect with. A good story requires emotion like it really does to

need to connect with it from an emotional standpoint right that's why

you see good brands when they tell stories they always hit an emotional

side of things that could be like it could be anger that could be sadness

that could be happiness it could be humorous right those are things that

like trigger an emotion within us and what a lot of people don't realize and

I'm no doctor but in our brains like there's a part the part of our brain

that makes that is in charge of decision-making which is that the

prefrontal cortex is also in charge of our emotions so

that's why like when you're super, you see someone that's like

super sad and they go through a breakup and they're like I just want to go

shopping they make bad decisions because of the emotional response right so then

the same side of thing is that from a marketing or branding standpoint you can

connect with somebody from an emotional standpoint telling a story or what have

you that triggers a good emotion in there in the brain which causes them to

make a decision to be like I love that brand or love that product I want to

make that purchase decision right so it's so interesting how storytelling

can connect people to make decisions from a marketing standpoint or from a

business standpoint but also from just a personal development standpoint like if

someone tells a story that you can really relate to that decision can be

like that really motivated me and it could more what are they somebody to action

making a decision to change their life to change the current situation and so

everything is about storytelling and and it gets people to getting to that

emotional side of things and that's what I love about it because that gets really

that grips people that's what so makes it fun to to to tell those

stories and then see people make those those concrete decisions to change their

situation which is what I love. [Kdub] Well I love that and my prefrontal cortex

is telling me to emotionally respond with [Kyles] Caffeinated Questions! [KB] Left or right?

[Fabio] I have to go left cuz I'm a lefty [KB] Me too! So cheers to that. [Fabio] Cheers.

[KB] The weird ones that wear the watch on the wrong side. [Fabio] Yes or like when

we're drawing you get the pencil like, on your hand, you know what I mean?

All day, during exams. [KB] Spiral notebooks are not friendly.

[KB] Karaoke: solo or duet? [Fabio] Oh duet man. A hundred percent. One hundred percent. Can't do

it alone. [Kdub] Swing dancing or jazz dancing? [Fabio] Swing dancing. It has more

energy to it, I love it. [KB] Audio books or physical books? [Fabio] Audio books. It's easier

for me to consume. [Kdub] Sun or moon? [Fabio] Hmm gotta go sun, man, on that one.

[KB] Math or science? [Fabio] Ooh both are terrible. (laughs) I am going to have to go with science.

[Kdub] The Beatles or Led Zeppelin? [Fabio] Ah, Led Zeppelin. [KB] And then, last thing, would

you rather fly in space forever or swim in the ocean forever? [Fabio] Ooh...

I gonna have to go ocean, I'm gonna have to go ocean cuz you can still meet people

there at least people can meet you at sea or whatever. [KB] Merpeople. Merpeople.

[Fabio] People can meet you at sea and yeah you know bring the boats together or

something you know as opposed to being in space no one could see you. [Kdub and Fabio] "Merman". [Fabio] Yes we will

morph into mermen. [KB] Alright time for an Espresso Shot. The big, lurching question.

Fab, if you could drink coffee or whatever you want to drink with anybody

that has ever lived or ever will live who would it be and more important than

that what would you talk about, what would you ask them? [Kdub] Over coffee [KB] Or

whatever. [Fabio] Ooh, good question um I'm gonna have to say like and this is

like dead or alive or this is people that are living today? [KB] Yeah. [Kdub] Dead or alive. [KB] Anyone that has ever lived.

[Fabio] Dead or alive. I have to say actually my faith is a big part of my life so I have

to say Jesus Christ I actually like being able to have to sit with him and

and chat with him would be quite an experience and be pretty cool. [KB] What would you ask him?

[Fabio] What would I ask him? I don't know like I just I would just ask

him about his his life and just get to know him better that sort of thing in

real life would you be which would be awesome get closer with him and then

from another standpoint I would probably say there's a guy that I just I've

always really wanted to meet hopefully get the chance to to one day awesome

awesome coach and consultant Brendon Burchard

love his stuff love his stuff so he's another one I would say who's

probably living today that I'd love to meet I pick his brain and have a coffee

with in chat chat with him over his journey his journey his his story is

quite amazing as well in terms of how we went from where he is to where he is

today. One of the best coaches in the world. [Kdub] I was just gonna say what we'll do is. we'll look him up and (bubble popping noise) drop him right down there and tag him.

[KB] I was gonna say that I think Fabio just changed the format of the show because that just gave

me an idea like now it would be like the Double Espresso Shot: Who would you have

coffee with that's dead and who would you have coffee with that's alive, the Double Espresso Shot! [Kdub] I love it! [KB] So Fab, one last thing, parting piece of guidance, parting

thought or a thought-provoking question for the viewers, your call. [Fabio] Okay I would

say I would say especially in our careers or in business no matter what we

have this notion that we for whatever reason want to go out things alone and

just like plug away and put our head down there's that great quote right if

you want to go fast go alone if you want to go far go together and that's one of

the biggest things that I've really learned is just bring people together

that can that can yeah you guys can share on that

journey with just like you guys together doing it right just one you do it to

living proof right we're go together and build a community of people and you'll

go further instead of doing things alone all the

time and plus who wants to celebrate your wins and successes your

accomplishments alone you want to do with other people that are there and

that you can that you can celebrate with along the way so that's what one of the

biggest things is seek out people that you can bring along on that journey and

and take them with you and work along side to accomplish those

goals so it's one of the biggest things especially for me I would say when I

first started I wasn't like that I was like put your head down and do this

alone and then you know things change for me. [KB] Hey Kyle, can you assist me real quick?

[Kdub] Of course I can. [KB] Hurry. Hurry. It's hot. [Kdub] Ah, ah, ah. [KB] Oh he's stuck. [Kdub] I'm stuck! I'm stuck! [Kyles] Oh geeze... (random noises)

Microsoft Build: Seattle Coffee - Duration: 3:21.

>> So James we just got

out of Washington State Convention Center.

>> Yeah, you know there's one thing

that I absolutely love about this city.

>> What is it?

>> Coffee.

>> Coffee.

>> Yeah, there're so many great shops all around here,

roasteries. And let's go check them all out.

>> Yes, let's do it.

>> So, James we

just walked up from

the Convention Center just a couple of blocks away.

>> Yeah nice quick walk. Where we at?

>> So right now we're actually at

the Starbucks Reserve Roastery.

It's absolutely gorgeous.

>> Fantastic, right?

>> Yeah they have all sorts of

their ways of making coffee,

drinking coffee, experiencing coffee.

It is an experience in itself right?

>> It is, Starbuck's best that they have to offer.

>> And one of my favorite things about

this location is actually the corner.

There's so much food,

there's so much different coffee to drink.

You guys can come up here and check this out for sure.

>> Yeah.

>> Let's go get a coffee.

>> Let's do it.

>> James you brought me to another coffee shop.

There's got to be a reason.

>> You know I did, we're here at Monorail Espresso.

It's my absolute favorite coffee shop in the entire city!

>> Really?

>> It's true.

>> What about it?

>> Well their espresso drinks are amazing.

But, it is cash only.

Gotta bring cash. Support local.

>> What I recommend is an eight ounce burnt cream latte.

Absolutely dynamite.

>> Well, we'll give it a try.

>> Yeah.

>> One nice part about this, is it's actually

only two blocks from the Convention Center,

so you can walk right over.

But as James said, make sure you bring cash.

>> Absolutely. Let's go get a coffee.

>> Let's do it.

>> Oh my god, that dog is adorable.

>> So we made it to Pike Place, historic Pike Place.

>> That's right, all the way,

to the very first Starbucks ever.

It's the longest line that

you'll ever be in for a Starbucks.

>> I'm guessing it probably

tastes like all the other Starbucks.

>> Yeah. It tastes like Starbucks.

>> Yeah.

>> It's pretty delicious. But they do some exclusive swag

to be the very first Starbucks which makes great gifts.

>> I didn't know that.

>> Yeah.

>> So I know a place

actually right around the corner that

has no line and a better view. Do you want to go there?

>> Let's do it.

>> All right.

James, it's

being a long day.

>> Yeah. And I know, we drank a lot of coffee but

for me I like to end my day one way.

>> I'm guessing some more coffee and maybe a story.

>>That's right. At Storyville Coffee.

>> That's one of the best ways.

>> Absolutely. Cause you can

never really have enough coffee.

>> No.

>> Yeah, let's go and order.

>> Let's go and order.

>> James, thanks for joining

me for coffee here at Storyville.

>> Any time I'll always have a cup of coffee.

>> Conversations are great. The views are amazing.

>> Beautiful.

>> And, you know, one of my favorite things about Storyville is

actually what they do with their profits.

Can you tell me more about that?

>> That's right,

not only do they have great coffee, but they donate

all the profits to anti-human trafficking organizations.

So great cause, great coffee, great views.

>> It's fantastic.

>> So if you're at Build. Come check it out.

>> And say hi to us if you see us.

>> We'll see you at

Microsoft Build 2018.
