Kate Upton, who is expecting her first child with husband Justin Verlander, is dedicating her Labor Day weekend to helping others expand their families — with pets! The couple is hosting their 4th Annual Grand Slam Adoption Event, a special day created to help raise awareness for local animal adoption agencies and find homes for dozens of shelter dogs

The event will be held in Houston, Texas, for the first time, taking place on September 2  from 3:30 – 6:30  at The Plaza on Crawford Street at Minute Maid Park prior to the Houston Astros vs

Los Angeles Angels baseball game. It's all part of Astros Dog Day presented by Tito's Handmade Vodka

Guests can expect games, music, food, drinks and lots of adorable, adoptable dogs

Along with placing shelter dogs with loving families, the event will also help rescue canines find new, meaningful careers

Funds raised during this year's Grand Slam Adoption Event will go to Verlander's Wins for Warriors Foundation

The Houston Astros pitcher and animal lover founded the military veteran-focused non-profit to change the lives of veterans and dogs

 Wins for Warriors Foundation will use donations from the event to take adoptable dogs out of shelters and train them to be service animals for military veterans

Ahead of this amazing-sounding dog day of summer, PEOPLE talked to Upton about her new life in Houston, why this event is important to her and what's next for her and Verlander

My whole family and I are huge dog lovers. I've grown up with rescue dogs all my life

After lots of visits to the animal shelter in my hometown, I was really inspired to host an event and raise awareness for the amazing dogs that needed homes! The goal of the Grand Slam Adoption Event is to raise awareness for dog adoption, and to raise funds for dogs to be rescued from shelters and then trained as service animals for military veterans

This event combines multiple passions of both Justin and mine. First, we're both passionate dog lovers and have grown up with rescue animals

Also, we're huge supporters of the military and veteran community. Justin started a charity called Wins for Warriors Foundation which focuses on serving those who serve this Country

The ability to work together to rescue dogs and to support military veterans is extremely important to us

We're on our 4th annual year of the Grand Slam Adoption Event, and I couldn't be more excited about how it's progressed and grown

Each year, we're able to raise awareness and funds for adoptable dogs. This year, we've partnered with an incredible dog trainer, and all funds raised will go to a program to rescue dogs from shelters to train them to be service animals for military veterans

I'm thrilled to host the event for the first time in Houston. It's now been a year after Hurricane Harvey devastated the area, and there are still a lot of dogs who are in need of homes

Justin and I want to do our part to help that happen. We appreciate any support from near or far

He's been to the early battle ground states of Iowa and New Hampshire.And he's been setting himself up as a political rival to Trump

 Trump said on Friday that he would be campaigning for Cruz, with whom he had a bitter battle in 2016 for the GOP presidential nomination, in the 'biggest stadium' he could find

'I will be doing a major rally for Senator Ted Cruz in October. I'm picking the biggest stadium in Texas we can find,' Trump tweeted

'As you know, Ted has my complete and total Endorsement. His opponent is a disaster for Texas - weak on Second Amendment, Crime, Borders, Military, and Vets!'  Share this article Share Cruz had all but begged Trump to campaign for him in Texas, where he's been the junior senator since 2013

'I would certainly welcome his support, and I hope to see him in Texas,' he said, according to the Dallas Morning News, last month

The freshman senator told the Houston Chronicle he'd spoken to the president about campaigning for him ahead of the mid-terms

'I think we are likely to see the president down in Texas before the election,' he said

  Cruz is locked in an unusually competitive general election race with Democratic Congressman Beto O'Rourke, who is drawing comparisons to a young Barack Obama

Avenatti, meanwhile, is balancing time on the cable news circuit as his client sues Trump and the political trail

He attended the Hillsborough County Democrats' Summer Picnic fundraiser in Greenfield in August in New Hampshire, the first-in-the-nation presidential primary state

Avenatti also recently visited Iowa, which holds the caucuses that signal the beginning of the presidential nomination process

'I'm exploring a run for the presidency of the United States, and I wanted to come to Iowa and listen to people and learn about some issues that are facing the citizens of Iowa and do my homework,' he told the Des Moines Register at the time

 During his trip to the Iowa State Fair - a must-stop on the presidential campaign trail - Avenatti dismissed concerns he's is contemplating a run for publicity's sake

'I would never think to come to Iowa in order to use the state or the people of the state to raise my profile,' he said

'And obviously, if I do this, then I intend to work hard, and I know that ultimately the trust of the citizens of Iowa is going to have to be earned

'   Avenatti has gained national attention for representing Daniels in her lawsuit against Trump following an alleged 2006 affair, which the president denies

 Avenatti tweeted in July that he would challenge Trump in 2020 if 'no other candidate in the race that has a REAL chance at beating him

'Like Trump, Avenatti is a brash political outsider with a natural talent for cable television news, a blistering Twitter feed and a knack for a catchy slogan

He turned those tools against Trump as he represents Daniels and a growing list of critical clients

Ted Cruz (R-Tex.), tweeted on Friday: "I will be doing a major rally for Senator Ted Cruz in October

I'm picking the biggest stadium in Texas we can find." Hmm. According to World Atlas, Kyle Field at Texas A&M University sits 102,512

 Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, where the University of Texas at Austin Longhorns football team plays, sits 100,119 but somehow crammed in 102,315 for a game in 2016

AT&T Stadium, home to the Dallas Cowboys, has "a seating capacity of 80,000, but can be expanded to 100,000 when necessary

The maximum capacity of the stadium, including standing room, is 105,000. A record attendance of 108,713 was reached on February 14, 2010, during the 2010 NBA All-Star Game

" So if Trump wants to keep his promise and show Texas is still deep red, he'll need to fill a stadium with 100,000-plus seats

If not, expect a lot of shots of empty seats, or graphs comparing whatever small facility he manages to fill

(He's very sensitive about crowd size, you know.) That sort of mishap is only one of the problems that might afflict a Trump-Cruz rally

Trump might insult the recently deceased Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.). However, in Texas, they consider POWs who underwent torture to be heroes

Trump might brag about his zero-tolerance policy. That might not sit well with Texans, who according to a June poll oppose the administration's separation of families at the border by an overwhelming margin

("Overall, 28 percent of Texas voters support the practice — 16 percent strongly so — while 57 percent oppose it — 44 percent strongly so

") Trump could thump his chest about rescinding the Deferred Action of Childhood Arrivals

Then again, a federal judge in Texas refused to allow the administration to suspend DACA

Moreover, past polling shows that about 60 percent of Texans support extending DACA

Trump's presence might give local media the excuse to run all those clips of Trump calling Cruz "Lyin' Ted," or of Cruz calling Trump a "pathological liar

" Trump also might let the cat out of the bag, telling voters that a new Justice Brett M

Kavanaugh would reverse Roe v. Wade. Because Cruz opposes abortions in the case of rape, Cruz's opponent Rep

Beto O'Rourke (D-Tex.) would be able to remind voters that the Trump-Cruz formula would have pregnant rape victims driving hundreds of miles to obtain a legal abortion

In addition, Trump might tout his trade war. That's a problem in Texas. "Tens of billions of dollars of goods are traded between China and Texas each year

Texas imported over $42 billion in goods from the country in 2017, second only to Mexico," the Texas Tribune reported in July

"It exported about $16 billion in goods to China, placing it behind only Mexico and Canada

" Moreover: "Cotton is the state's 10th largest export. Nearly half of the U.S. cotton exported to China comes from Texas

Soy is a smaller market for Texas, but China is the state's largest international soy customer

Texas exports about $157 million worth of corn a year, making it the 13th largest exporter of the crop in the country, though U

S. corn exports to China have dropped precipitously over the past few years due to increased regulations on the Chinese side

" You get the idea. Trump could boast about denying federal workers a raise. However, according to the Labor Department, as of June 2017 there were 199,760 federal employees in the state

When they hear Trump boast about indexing capital gains, they might get really mad

As the Tax Policy Center pointed out, "The 3 percent of returns with [adjusted gross income] over $200,000 reported 31 percent of AGI and 83 percent of capital gains; the 0

3 percent with AGI over $1,000,000 reported 15 percent of AGI and 61 percent of capital gains

" Cruz could then have to explain how he can be for the "little guy." Finally, Trump might brag about wanting to repeal Obamacare and refusing to defend the protection for people with preexisting conditions

It's estimated that 27 percent of Texans under 65 — more than 4.5 million people  — have preexisting conditions

Good luck explaining that one. Don't underestimate Trump's ability to gin up the base

By the same token, his presence also amounts to waving a red flag in front of those outside his base who'll be equally if not more fired up

And it just so happens that Trump's views on the issue I've noted above don't even pull support from a majority of Texans

Cruz may still win by virtue of the sheer number of Republicans in the state. It's nevertheless sort of remarkable that he needs to come crawling to Trump to help win what should be a slam-dunk race

According to BuzzFeed News, he dismissed the central reason for Russia's ouster from the group-formerly-known-as-the-G-8 during the group's meeting in Quebec last weekend

Russia's seizure of Crimea was warranted, he reportedly implied, because residents of Crimea spoke Russian anyway

It is true that most Crimeans speak Russian, as indicated in a survey published by The Washington Post shortly before the invasion

In fact, that bit of data was cited by Russian President Vladimir Putin during a speech in March 2014 addressing the move

Trump's reported argument is not a new one. But it does bring up an interesting point, as illustrated in this tweet from Texas-based writer Chris Hooks

According to Census Bureau data, there are at least five counties in which a majority of the population speaks Spanish

(The bureau has recent data only for larger counties.) They are: Yuma County, Ariz

53.3 percent Spanish speakers. Imperial County, Calif. 77.5 percent Spanish speakers

Miami-Dade County, Fla. 74.4 percent Spanish speakers. El Paso County, Tex. 72.4 percent Spanish speakers

Hidalgo County, Tex. 84.4 percent Spanish speakers. There are another 10 counties where a minority of the population speaks only English: Los Angeles County, Calif

43 percent speak only English. Merced County, Calif. 48.2 percent speak only English

Monterey County, Calif. 45.4 percent speak only English. Santa Clara County, Calif

47 percent speak only English. Tulare County, Calif. 48.5 percent speak only English

Hudson County, N.J. 39.5 percent speak only English. Doña Ana County, N.M. 47.5 percent speak only English

McKinley County, N.M. 42.7 percent speak only English. Bronx County, N.Y. 40.1 percent speak only English

Queens County, N.Y. 43.9 percent speak only English. That doesn't mean that the rest of the population speaks one other language, mind you

In the Bronx, Queens, Los Angeles and Santa Clara County — Silicon Valley — there are a range of other languages spoken beyond just English

(In Santa Clara County, home to a large Vietnamese population among other nationalities, census data suggest that only about 18 percent of residents speak Spanish

) It's also worth noting that none of these 15 counties has a density of foreign-language speakers that matches the saturation of Russian in Crimea

There, nearly all of the population speaks Russian. In our data, only Hidalgo County, Tex

, got over 80 percent. Were Mexico to seize the four counties on its border, though, it would be gaining about 12,300 square miles of territory, slightly more land than Russia took when it occupied Crimea

The population that would suddenly have a new nationality would be slightly more than the population of Crimea: 2

1 million. What's more, the population of those four counties (the five at the top of this article minus Miami-Dade), is more than 80 percent Mexican by origin

It's not clear what population or language density Trump thinks constitutes sufficient reason to seize another nation's territory

If Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto were to seize those counties as part of his own territory, it would be up to him to convince Trump that the levels of cultural affiliation in those places — slightly lower than Crimea's affinity for Russia — still meant that he was perfectly entitled to call them his own
