Austin: Migas Tacos | Tacos of Texas Ep. 1 - Duration: 8:25.
- Taco tip number 118: don't throw your chips away.
- Put them in your migas way.
(chips crunch)
(Spanish style music)
I'm Mando Rayo.
- And I'm Jarod Neece.
- And we're taco journalists exploring
the iconic tacos of Texas.
- [Jarod] Today we're in Austin, Texas.
Live music capital of the world and our hometown.
- We're here for the migas,
Austin's most important taco of the day.
(chants) We're here for the migas, here for the migas!
- [Mando] We're here at El Mundo de Mando
in East Austin AKA my house.
- [Jarod] Do you guys like migas tacos?
- Yeah!
- [Mando] What makes tacos different in Texas
is that, you know, Texas is a mix of different cultures.
You know, for us it's about community,
it's about building trust with communities
and forming relationships and honoring people,
where they come from.
And it's about bringing kind of all these different people
with different experiences and us coming together
and growing together and eating together.
(Mando laughs)
- You know, Mando was writing for The Austinist
and I said to him, "What are you doing over there
"writing for these guys?" and I was like,
"Come to taco journalism, we need some street cred!"
(singing in Spanish)
He liked what we were doing. - [Mando] Stuck.
- [Jarod] You know, all of us were Texans
and you know, starting taco journalism was all about,
you know, getting people to go into these taco restaurants
or trailers that maybe they were not feeling welcome
or afraid to go into or just hesitant
and bridging these two divides of, you know,
taco lovers and the people making them
and making sure that everybody,
you know, we can all just get along.
(Mando laughs)
Break some bread, break some tortillas.
- [Mando] Break some tortillas.
- In our book, we traveled to 10 cities
and that's just only 10 cities in Texas.
We only traveled like 7000 miles.
We have like, I don't know how much square footage
there is in Texas but it's a big--
(Jarod laughs)
It's a big state.
- I think they do it in square miles.
(both laugh)
That was a blast from the taco past, man.
Let's take these guys to Joe's Bakery
and show them how to really make tacos.
(mariachi band plays)
- [Mando] Joe's: where every Mexican knows your name.
(restaurant patrons talking)
Jose, Jose!
- So Austin gets hated on a little bit
because we get told that we're the,
we have the white breakfast tacos.
And I would challenge anybody
that feeds that line or feeds that beast
to come to East Austin and come to Joe's.
Have yourself a migas breakfast taco
with re-fried beans con todo,
and it'll settle that argument pretty quick.
- So are migas kinda your go-to taco?
Is it a thing you eat a lot? - [Jose] Yeah, man.
So usually flour, migas, migas con todo and beans, man.
Beans on it, the re-fried beans, you gotta have 'em.
- Yeah, well, re-fried beans are the Mexican mayonnaise.
- They are the Mexican mayonnaise.
(Mando laughs)
- [Jarod] What makes a good breakfast taco?
- [Jose] Oh, man, the beans, the beans are the must.
Eggs and then like, if we're talking about migas,
then it definitely is the tostadas,
you gotta be crispy, man. - [Jarod] Right.
- [Jose] The egg has to be fresh
'cause you go some places, they, man, not knocking anybody,
but there are places and you get 'em on those warmers.
You do not respect yourself
if you're eating off one of those things.
Come get your fresh taco. - [Mando] Yeah.
- So Jose, you rep East Austin pretty hard.
What is East Austin, how did it become East Austin?
- [Jose] So in 1929, Latinos and African Americans
traditionally lived downtown,
and they were moved, relocated east of 35.
People consider Congress to be the divider of Austin,
but locals know I-35 is the great wall
of Austin that divides.
And I mean, you can see it socio-economically, man.
Up and down 35, you can see the disparities.
- [Mando] Also tell me a little bit
about the changes in East Austin.
- Seeing people that didn't wanna leave having to leave
because of property taxes and whatnot.
Seeing businesses that couldn't stay open
and couldn't compete anymore.
Something somebody told me a long time ago is
"Nostalgia didn't keep the lights on."
So if you love a restaurant,
then go there and spend your money.
Don't go to the IHOPs, don't go to the Denny's,
go to the mom-and-pops and spend your money.
- [Mando] There's new places coming up.
How do you see that?
- [Jose] It's all about collaboration, man,
and my mama always told me,
"If you don't speak to your neighbor,
"then you're never gonna know your neighbor's problems
"or the problems that you share."
And so, reaching out to these folks
and sitting down and chatting
'cause, I mean, at the end of the day, man,
we aren't all that different.
- [Mando] It's great to hear what Jose's doing,
to reach the old and the new.
On to taco numero dos.
(mariachi band plays)
- We're here at Veracruz All Natural
at their newest brick and mortar.
- We're here to eat the best migas in Texas.
- Let's go.
- Let's go!
(both laugh)
(mariachi music)
(mariachi band plays)
- [Mando] You can find migas anywhere in Austin.
They're an affordable meal for this young city
that's always on the go.
Just like migas, these taco makers are resourceful
and create deliciousness.
- Well, it was really cool
to show everyone our taco journalism history
and where the tacos have taken us, man.
- But also about, you know, what we can do
as supporters of these mom-and-pop shops.
For me, it always goes back to the people.
Like for us, the taco is kind of that entry point,
but it's about the people and the recipes
and those traditions and that's pretty much
what makes us taco journalists.
So thanks for tuning in.
- [Jarod] Tacos never die.
- [Mando] Tacos never die.
(mariachi band plays)
- [Jarod] You know, Porfirio's.
- [Mando] Mm-hm. - [Jarod] Or...
- [Mando] Joe's Bakery.
- [Jarod] Or Rosita's Al Pastor.
- [Mando] Habanero's.
- [Jarod] Piedras Negras.
- [Mando] Taqueria Chapala.
- [Jarod] Taqueria Los, Los Altos?
- [Mando] Uh-huh.
- [Jarod] Los Jaliscienses.
- [Mando] Los Jaliscienses. La Michoacana.
- [Jarod] All the Michoacanas.
- [Mando] All the Michoacana.
And Borrego De Oro.
- [Jarod] Taco La Flor on south-first.
- [Mando] Valentina's.
- [Jarod] All the Arandas.
(mariachi music)
- [Mando] In the next Proximo Show!
- [Jarod] We'll explore Houston
and their taco trucks on every corner.
- [Mando] And talk to DREAMers
on how they define the meaning of home.
- [Jarod] And see how Houston throws down
on tacos al pastor.
(Spanish style music)

Texas dentist pulls off miraculous makeover for man without him even knowing it - Duration: 4:58.
ATexas dentist helped a man transform his life by making over his smile, with his emotional reaction caught on camera just moments after the procedure was complete
Dr.Kenny Wilstead offered to fix Dillon Moore's damaged teeth one year when he came across him on Facebook and noticed he never smiled, but Moore couldn't take off work to come in for the procedure, so he thought that was the end of that
Fast forward to one year later and Moore found himself on the receiving end of a free extreme makeover, just two hours after sitting down in the dentist's chair at Marshall Family Dental and thinking he was only going to have a tooth pulled
'I was wondering what was taking so long,' Moore said through happy tears, while laughing and grinning from ear to ear with his new pearly whites in full view, in a video shared to Facebook on September 18 by Wilstead
'I haven't smiled since I was a kid without my hand over my face,' he said. Now, Moore's Facebook profile photo features the toothy grins of not only his children, but him, too
'Today was a first.actually pulling off a smile makeover without the patient even knowing
,' Wilstead wrote with the post.Wilstead explained how he came across Moore randomly on the social networking site and noticed his lack of smile
Moore's 'before' photo showed badly decayed teeth across the front of his mouth, that seemed like they were barely hanging on
'I offered my services to fix his smile and he said that he had so many issues and was hopeful to get them fixed but was unable to get off work,' Wilstead wrote
'He completely forgot about me while an entire year went by and then he got a tooth ache
His boss chose to send him to my office to get his back tooth pulled and gave him a day off to do it
' As luck would have it for Moore, Wilstead has an excellent memory.'I remembered who he was when I saw him AND I remembered what I offered him a year ago,' Wilstead wrote
'He didn't recognize that it was me who made that offer but I decided to make good on it either way
' Wilstead said he 'secretly numbed way more of [Moore's] mouth than normal for a single tooth extraction
' He confessed: 'Then I proceeded to do an entire smile makeover without him knowing or even giving me permission to
' The procedure took two hours to complete, Wilstead said, with Moore's priceless reaction caught on camera when it was all said and done
'He then sent me pics of how happy his kids were when they saw their dad smiling for the first time in their lives,' Wilstead said
This isn't the first time Wilstead has done something like this for a person in need, but it was the first time he did it without the person even knowing
Moore said he thinks what Wilstead does is 'awesome' and never thought it would happen for him, until it did

Texas Schoolmaster Butch Groves Fired After Cursing Out Michael Avenatti | Heavy.com - Duration: 6:40.
Texas Schoolmaster Butch Groves Fired After Cursing Out Michael Avenatti | Heavy.com
Twitter Now-former head of upper school at Oak Ridge School in Arlington, Texas.
Groves was fired for his expletive-laden Twitter message to lawyer Michael Avenatti.
"You are a fuc*ing douchebag, you lying piece of shit," the head of an upscale private Texas high school wrote in a Twitter message to Michael Avenatti Sunday evening.
Avenatti, Stormy Daniels' lawyer now representing a person with information about alleged sexual misconduct in the 1980's by Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh, tweeted Sunday that he had a client with information about Kavanaugh when he received this:.
"Meet @butchgroves, the Head of Upper School at The Oakridge School in Arlington, TX.
I have never met him before or communicated with him but here is his message to me earlier tonight.
The parents of Oakridge must be so proud to have this man teaching their sons and daughters.".
Later Monday, a letter to parents was sent announcing he'd suspended Groves "indefinitely.
"Dear Oakridge Parents and Guardians,.
It was brought to my attention this morning that Butch Groves, head of upper school, sent an inappropriate private message to attorney Michael Avenatti from his personal social media account.
I've been in contact with Mr Groves who has admitted to the communication; he deeply regrets his comments and the negative attention brought to the school.
That said, the Oak Ridge school has clear policies in place regarding online face-to-face communications.
Oak Ridge employees are expected to maintain respect, dignity and professionalism that is consistent with our mission.
Mr Groves' his conduct was unacceptable and inconsistent with these policies and standards.
I have therefore suspended Mr Groves indefinitely as we conclude our investigation.
Sincerely,. Jon Kellam.
The Oakridge School "serves students and families from 36 cities and 15 countries.
With 772 bright, college-bound students enrolled in fifteen grade levels, Oakridge offers a full menu of curricular and extracurricular opportunities in a dynamic, student-centered environment." Tuition and fees for a high schooler cost around $25,000 a year.
Some in the community questioned whether an indefinite suspension was the same as a firing and questioned the need for an investigation.
"Let this be a lesson to those that believe that they can send abusive messages to me or others without consequence.
People are free to engage in spirited debate but if you are abusive, you will be held accountable.".
Avenatti tweeted Sunday shortly after The New Yorker published the account of a second woman who has come forward to accuse Kavanaugh of sexual misconduct, this time from his freshman year at Yale University.
He's not yet named his client but said she has been granted multiple security clearances as part of work done for multiple federal agencies.
"The GOP and others better be very careful in trying to suggest that she is not credible.
Senate Judiciary Committee chairman Sen.
Chuck Grassley, R-IA, requested Avenatti give his office any "relevant information he might have.".
Avenatti responded that he has evidence of gang rapes perpetrated by Kavanaugh, his long-time friend and conservative writer Mark Judge and others in Washington D.C.
in the 1980's.
Christine Blasey Ford came forward to accuse Kavanaugh of attempted rape while the two were high school students in the early 1980's.
Blasey Ford agreed to testify about the sexual assault in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee Thursday.
Then Sunday night, a second woman came forward.
Now, Avenatti says he has evidence that Pres.
Donald Trump's pick for the high court was allegedly involved in gang rapes.
Avenatti told Heavy just after midnight he'd be "providing more evidence and information over the next 48 hours" and added that things are going to get a lot worse for Kavanaugh.

Tough as Texas? - IXNAY PAC #VersusTed Cruz - 2018 Midterms Ad - Duration: 0:40.
When I hear the campaign slogan, "Tough as Texas,"
I immediately think of overcooked steak:
the way Donald Trump likes it.
Served with ketchup on the side provided by his political toadie,
Ted Cruz.
Now if that's Texas,
I'll kiss your ass.
If Ted was truly as "Tough as Texas,"
he would have stood up to Trump a long time ago for bad-mouthing Heidi.
And if he doesn't have the backbone to stand up for his wife,
who in the hell thinks Ted Cruz is gonna stand up for Texas?
Don't take Texas politics lying down.
Stand up and vote!
