I remember when my dad brought home a computer
There was a collection of games and programs to
start with, which were quickly exhausted and at
that stage there was nowhere else you could get them
so I went to the library and I found this book on
BASIC programming language and I went home and I tried
to build some for myself.
So the first thing I coded was a rocket,
which I animated so that it slowly, very slowly,
moved up and as far as I'm concerned,
it went into space.
As a kid I was in awe.
Today at Citadel I help to invent and manage the
technology systems as part of our commodities team.
The kind of things we're trading: wheat,
carbon emissions, natural gas, that's the building blocks
of modern day life.
They all operate as ecosystems and overlaying them
are ecosystems of data.
What I do is figure out the best ways of gathering
the data, populating the model, and visualizing results
for analysis.
A lot of this is giving people predictability
and stability.
The ability to manage and plan physical ecosystems.
My team, there's a great deal of responsibility and pride
working in these markets and it is a team.
We're face-to-face to our customer every day.
It's not a situation where you come and you're working
on someone else's road map.
We are a true partnership, we sit with them,
we analyze problems together, and we come up with
solutions together.
The development cycles are fast.
We create a tool in the morning, deploy by noon
and see the impact in real time
And in many ways it's very similar to
what I was doing before.
I'm still making that rocket go up the screen.
But now what's traveling are ideas, capital,
and economies.
