Chainsaw Safety: Personal Protective Equipment - Duration: 3:42.
I'm Brian Wagner.
I'm a logging safety trainer, and today we're going to be
doing a basic chainsaw safety section.
What we're going to start this thing out with is personal protective equipment, what
we call PPE.
When we have overhead hazards present, you know we're going to be
required to wear a hard hat.
The purpose of the hard hat is to deflect the
object that's making impact.
Safety glasses definitely.
And this cutting system actually has a visor on it also.
But definitely a safety glass, should there be impact made, it is going to protect the
eye.
For ear protection I like the muffs.
Another preference is a plug or a set of muffs that may not even include the hardhat.
Probably in my line of work, the meat and potatoes of the personal protective equipment
is going to be cut resistant leg wear.
What I have on today is actually chainsaw pants.
Inside these pants there's multiple layers of ballistic nylon, or warp-knit nylon, built
right into the pair of pants that I've got.
What is also available are chainsaw chaps.
And these are, you know, they go right around the leg and they buckle up and that affords
protection in a different way.
So we want to make certain that these things are on tight, so they work the way
that they're designed to work.
When it gets wet in the woods, I've got a pair of,
you know, the rubber chainsaw boots that have the steel chocks in them.
Basically on this boot, anywhere where the orange color
is, is chainsaw protection.
Should I dribble one across the foot, hopefully this
boot is going to, you know, prevent me from picking an injury up.
Also, another style of these, if I'm in a log yard mill situation, these rubber boots
also come with a Vibram sole on them, so there's just a lot of different options
out there for the people using the power saws.
These gloves that I have right here do not have saw protection in
them, they're just a nice pair of leather gloves.
What I have over here to the side are actually chainsaw mitts and both of these
mitts have chainsaw protective material on the back of the mitt unit, and
that's just another layer of protection should something happen.
After going through the personal protective equipment from the head to the toe, what I'd
like to show is a real-life example of how this stuff can actually, probably,
save a life.
These were actually on one of our timber cutters.
Both legs were actually struck with the running saw
chain, and the particular set of protection here was the ballistic nylon.
And I feel, my own opinion is, this set of chaps right here probably saved this
man's life.
But this is just a real good example of real life how this stuff
works.
