History of drug treatment by Susan Snycerski via Udacity - Duration: 1:40.
Prior to the development of drugs for mental illness, people with mental disorders, as
we mentioned in the last lesson, were often treated poorly.
There were not effective behavioral therapies, or psychotherapy developed, to help individuals
manage their symptoms.
And therefore, many people resided in mental institutions or state hospitals.
In fact, by 1955 there were over half of a million of a people of the United States who
were living in mental institutions.
Then came the discovery of the phenothiazines.
These were initially developed as antihistamines, and they were first studied for their mildly
sedating action.
Chlorpromazine, that goes by the trade name Thorazine was the second phenothiazine discovered
and it was found produced calmness, conscious sedation, disinterest in and detachment from
external stimuli.
This condition was termed a Neuroleptic state and chlorpromazine was the first antipsychotic
or neuroleptic drug.
And these are used to manage psychosis.
Neuroleptic drugs are strong tranquilizers that are prescribed for Schizophrenia.
These drugs are effective for treating the symptoms of Schizophrenia because they decrease
delusions and hallucinations.
In fact, these were so effective, that by 1993, fewer than 220,000 people were still
residing in mental institutions.
The dramatic decrease in those living in institutions was due to the development of drug therapy.
These individuals were now able to manage their symptoms and they could leave the hospital
and live with family members or in group homes.

Medical Minute: Hybrid Laser Mole Treatment - Duration: 2:26.
Who loves their facial moles? Not everyone. Welcome to Dr. Scheiner's
Medical Minute. Today we're going to talk about a great way to treat moles with the
hybrid laser mole treatment. Facial moles are a common condition found in many people.
They can be present at birth or develop over the course of a lifetime. Though they are
frequently referred to as beauty marks, in many cases they are anything but beautiful. A
healthy facial complexion that is clear, bright and glowing sends a message of health and
vitality. When we have pigment spots, bumps, or moles on our face, they can make us appear
to be old, less healthy and less vibrant. Moles exist both above and below the skin
surface. The part of the mole that we see is often just the "tip of the iceberg".
Since moles extend so deeply beyond the top skin layer, the only way to fully remove them
is through surgical excision. This is necessary when the mole has irregular cells or is cancerous.
Fortunately, most moles are not dangerous but are instead a cosmetic concern. Because
surgical excision leaves a scar that is often 3 times as long as the lesion itself, many
people chose not to undergo surgical excision and instead continue to live with their irregular
facial feature. Thankfully there is another option. If the lesion isn't dangerous its
possible to "shave" it but this often results in a divot in the face or an incompletely
shaved lesion. This is why I developed the Hybrid laser Mole treatment. It involves taking
a small piece of the mole and sending to the pathologist first to insure it isn't dangerous.
Next, using an Erbium laser and a fine 2mm spot size, the residual mole can be planned
down cell layer by cell layer until its completely flat with the surrounding tissue. The skin then
grows over this and the result is a flat facial region in the area that had previously had the
mole. It should be noted that this procedure does leave the deeper portion of the lesion
behind, but since they generally grow very slowly, the results are likely to last
a very long time. If you have a facial mole that you would like reduced, this procedure
might be the right answer for you. I hope you found this interesting and I invite you
come back and watch again for our next medical minute. Goodbye for now and I wish each of
you a beautiful day.
