Today we'll be looking at personal protective equipment, or PPE

and why we need to wear it at work.

So what is PPE?

When we look at the task we do at work, we sometimes find hazards and we control these hazards by wearing PPE.

PPE signs can be found across Bedford that tell us what we must wear in that area.

To help us understand what kind of PPE to use at work,

we asked some of our PPE experts at Bedford.

The hospitality team makes healthy and delicious food for us all to enjoy and need to make sure no germs or objects get in the food.

Germs can make us sick, but the team always remember to wear their PPE such as hair nets and gloves.

To help protect themselves from hot dishes they wear oven mitts and aprons to protect their clothing.

Our food packaging team wear hair nets, gloves and coats to make sure germs and objects are kept out of the food.

Here in packaging, the team are wearing gloves to protect their hands

from products and materials that might have sharp edges.

Our cleaning teams also wear gloves to protect their skin

when using chemicals and from any germs.

In some areas we also need to wear eye protection such as safety glasses

to make sure we do not get anything in our eyes.

Some of these areas might be in manufacturing, packaging and APG.

When working in noisy environments we must protect our hearing. If we don't, we can damage our hearing.

PPE such as ear plugs or ear muffs must be worn at all times.

Ear plugs can be tricky to use so we have asked Matthew to help us out.

With clean hands, roll and squeeze the ear plug.

Reach over your head and gently pull your ear back.

Gently slide the ear plug into the ear until it feels snug.

Hold the ear plug there and allow it to expand in the ear.

To tell if the ear plug is in far enough,

it cannot be seen by someone looking at you from front on.

To safely remove ear plugs, gently twist while slowly pulling out.

It is important to wear PPE when working outdoors to protect us from sunburn,

heat stroke and the sun's UV rays which can cause skin cancer.

Our APG teams are always sun smart and wear their:

hats, glasses, ear muffs, gloves, long sleeve shirts, pants, safety boots and apply sunscreen.

When working in areas where there are foot hazards, we must wear PPE such as safety boots.

This will protect our feet from falling objects, sharp items on the ground, slippery surfaces and when operating some types of machinery.

When working near vehicles it is important to be seen.

The APG and Stores teams must wear hi-vis clothing at all times so traffic can see them.

Next time you see someone who may have forgotten to wear their PPE,

kindly remind them so they too can BSafe at Bedford.

And remember - if you see something, say something!
