Given the scale of devastation already... it might be hard to believe,... but officials
in Texas are warning that massive flooding in Houston may get even worse.
Major roads and infrastructure have been shut down in the wake of what was Hurricane Harvey...
and rescue efforts are continuing as the storm is set to swing back on the city.
Ro Aram reports.
Some 30,000 Houston residents are already in temporary shelters and officials say that
number is likely to increase to about half-a-million.
America's fourth largest city is still struggling to control the flooding in the wake Hurricane
Harvey, which made landfall on Friday.
It was the most powerful hurricane to strike Texas in more than 50 years and has now been
downgraded to a tropical storm.
So far about two thousand people have been rescued in and around the city and at least
eight are said to have died.
Texas is stepping up rescue efforts, with Governor Greg Abbott activating the entire
state National Guard.
Weather officials say a record 75 centimeters of precipitation that has already fallen in
Houston could double later this week.
That amounts to about a year's worth of rain and there are also threats of flooding extending
into neighboring Louisiana.
President Trump plans to go to Texas on Tuesday to survey the damage and he told reporters
he may also stop by Louisiana later this week.
He has also signed disaster proclamations for both cities, which has freed up federal
aid for the area.
