This is a story about smuggling basically, and you'll be shocked to learn that it's still
going on despite the fact that there's been a huge crackdown on the border.
My mission as part of this project was to look at the effectiveness of walls.
I mean, did they work?
Because, ultimately, this is a very expensive proposition of billions and billions of dollars
to build walls, fences, whatever you want to call them on the border.
The first thing we did was we started talking to people that live along the border.
I had a particular interest in smugglers.
And so I talked to certain smugglers like, "Hey, what if you put up a wall?
What do walls do?"
And well, you'd be shocked to learn that people tend to go around them, go through them,
go over them, go under them.
There are all kinds of ways to defeat walls.
Nobody is proposing that these walls actually block all of the traffic that's coming in from Mexico.
And the reason is that we have bridges in Texas - they call them ports of entry and
other places where they don't have a river.
Well, a wall is a very attractive idea in this sense.
"Hey, let's just build a wall that will stop all this illegal traffic, right?"
Well, the problem with that very simple - yet attractive in many ways - idea is that a lot
of the traffic, in fact most of the illegal traffic - whether it's people or dope - is
coming across the ports of entry, coming across the legal crossing point,
blending in with the legitimate traffic.
It's not my job to say whether or not policymakers should build a wall along the border.
However, what we discovered in the process of our reporting, is that walls would cost
many, many billions of dollars, and they would not impact the majority of illegal traffic,
when you're talking about humans and drugs coming across the border period.
