History of drug treatment by Susan Snycerski via Udacity - Duration: 1:40.
Prior to the development of drugs for mental illness, people with mental disorders, as
we mentioned in the last lesson, were often treated poorly.
There were not effective behavioral therapies, or psychotherapy developed, to help individuals
manage their symptoms.
And therefore, many people resided in mental institutions or state hospitals.
In fact, by 1955 there were over half of a million of a people of the United States who
were living in mental institutions.
Then came the discovery of the phenothiazines.
These were initially developed as antihistamines, and they were first studied for their mildly
sedating action.
Chlorpromazine, that goes by the trade name Thorazine was the second phenothiazine discovered
and it was found produced calmness, conscious sedation, disinterest in and detachment from
external stimuli.
This condition was termed a Neuroleptic state and chlorpromazine was the first antipsychotic
or neuroleptic drug.
And these are used to manage psychosis.
Neuroleptic drugs are strong tranquilizers that are prescribed for Schizophrenia.
These drugs are effective for treating the symptoms of Schizophrenia because they decrease
delusions and hallucinations.
In fact, these were so effective, that by 1993, fewer than 220,000 people were still
residing in mental institutions.
The dramatic decrease in those living in institutions was due to the development of drug therapy.
These individuals were now able to manage their symptoms and they could leave the hospital
and live with family members or in group homes.

Treatment for a common cause of blindness could be available in 5 years
by: David Williams
If you suffered from one of the most common forms of blindness, what would you give to
be able to cure it? Thats a question that might be up for discussion as a group of U.K.
researchers has reportedly developed a potential fix for one common cause of blindness. And
whats more, it could be ready for public use within the next five years.
It is said that age-related macular degeneration (AMD), which ends up destroying a persons
central vision, is one of the most common causes of blindness. But with the use of a
revolutionary stem cell therapy, the researchers were able to reverse its effects on at least
two different patients.
They did this through implanting a patch of stem cells over damaged areas at the back
of the eyes. As a result, the patients were able to not only read again but also see faces
that used to be nothing but blurry images on even fuzzier backgrounds. The solution
was crafted at the London Project to Cure Blindness, which is a collaboration between
experts from University College London (UCL) and Moorfields Eye Hospital.
According to Pete Coffey, a professor at UCL, the improvement in vision which is usually
measured by way of lines on a reading chart proved to be a lot better than they expected.
We said wed get three [out of the proposed 10] patients with vision recovery of three
lines. They probably wouldnt get reading vision back, he said. The first patient
has got six lines improvement, which is astounding, and the second has five lines and he seems
to be getting better as the months go by.

Whats even more interesting is that they are both really reading, said Coffey. At
best [the woman] could read about one word a minute with magnification. She is now reading
80 words a minute and [the man] is reading 50. (Related: Stem cell therapy becoming
more widely accepted.)
Wet and dry macular degeneration The cure devised by the researchers was made
specifically for patients that suffered from the wet form of AMD, which is said to
be caused by sudden leakage from blood vessels in the eye that ends up destroying the macula,
a key component of the retina. Evidently, retinal pigment epithelial (RPE) cells that
can be found in the macula are highly important to the functioning of the light sensitive
photoreceptor cells in the eye, and they just die without the necessary RPE support.
Given the success of their latest trials, the researchers are now looking to test their
cure on at least one more patient in order to ensure that it is truly safe. If everything
goes well, Coffey thinks that an off-the-shelf version of their treatment could become available
for surgeons to use within the next five years. However, the cure will be limited for only
about the 10 percent of AMD patients which have the wet form of it. Dry AMD is more problematic
in that it develops slowly in comparison and cant be cured. However, that could change
in the future, said Coffey.
According to Dr. Carmel Toomes, an associate professor at the Leeds Institute of Molecular
Medicine, the results of this research are quite promising. These results give the
many patients out there who suffer from AMD and other retinal degenerations real hope
that stem cells replacement therapy may be a reality in the near future, she said.
The fact that this early clinical trial has shown positive results means that a cure truly
could be quite close to becoming a reality.

12 Herbs And Supplements To Treat Multiple Sclerosis - Duration: 6:07.
12 Herbs And Supplements To Treat Multiple Sclerosis
Many herbs and supplements have strong medicinal properties, though research into most of them
is lacking.
Let's take a look at some of the more popular herbs and supplements in MS treatment.
1.
Ginkgo Biloba Studies on ginkgo biloba showed that it can
significantly improve the functional performance in MS patients.
Fatigue, symptom severity, as well as functionality showed much improvement in those taking 240
mg of a special extract of ginkgo biloba every day.7
2.
Ashwagandha Known as the "Queen of Ayurveda", Ashwagandha
is extensively used in Indian Ayurvedic medicines.
The herb possesses vast benefits including anti-stress, anti-cancer, and neurodegenerative
pathologies.8 Studies have shown that leaves of ashwagandha possess cognitive enhancers
that improve executive functions, memory, motivation etc.
Studies also show that the effects of Ashwagandha leaf extracts are multi dimensional that include
reversal of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's pathologies, protection against environmental
neurotoxins and enhancement of memory.
9 The root extracts of ashwagandha, meanwhile, have proved to be useful for the treatment
of dyskinesia or impairment of voluntary movement.10 3.
Bee Pollen Another natural treatment for multiple sclerosis
is using bee pollen or bee venom.11 While there is much controversy around this, studies
have shown that it has antifungal, antimicrobial, antiviral, anti-inflammatory, hepatoprotective,
anticancer, immunostimulating, radical scavenging, and local analgesic properties and that it
is quite effective as a treatment methodology in various diseases.12 Be wary of allergic
reactions, though.13 4.
Burdock Root Burdock has long been used as a health food
in Chinese cuisine.
It has also been used therapeutically in European, North American, and Asian societies.
Studies show that the roots, seeds, and leaves of the plant have therapeutic benefits.
Active compounds in the root are seen to possess properties that aid in detoxifying blood as
well as in promoting blood circulation to the skin surface, all of which helps an MS
patient to feel better.
Leaf extracts have properties that can prevent the growth of oral microorganisms.
The seeds meanwhile, possess anti-inflammatory effects and also inhibitory effects on tumors.14
In certain cases, burdock root causes allergic reactions on the skin like dermatitis.
5.
Dandelion Root And Leaf Dandelion has been used in herbal medicines
in Korea.
Both the root and leaf of the plant are said to possess medicinal properties.
Studies show that dandelion has antioxidant, anti-inflammatory properties, which can be
helpful in patients with MS.15 It also possesses properties to reduce fatigue, which is one
of the main symptoms of MS.16 6.
Echinacea For long, Echinacea has been used to treat
upper respiratory illnesses, especially cold.
The plant extract has many other properties like anti-inflammatory properties17 and aiding
new tissue production18 which hold much promise of a better quality of life in MS patients.
7.
Ginger Ginger has long been used the world over for
various culinary and medicinal properties.
Research shows that ginger also has anti-inflammatory and neuroprotective potential.19 It can prevent
cell death, is a strong antioxidant and may either mitigate or prevent generation of free
radicals.
The potential role of ginger in preventing inflammatory problems makes ginger an excellent
choice for MS patients.20 8.
Turmeric Turmeric contains curcuminoids, which have
been shown to have neuroprotective,21 antioxidant, and anti-inflammatory properties.22 High on
preventive and putative therapeutic properties, turmeric is believed to play a crucial role
in various diseases including multiple sclerosis.
9.
Huo Ma Ren Better known as Chinese hemp seed, huo ma
ren belongs to the cannabis family and is used extensively in both conventional and
alternative medicine.23 Though known mostly as a sedative, it has a soothing effect on
the central nervous system as well.
Hemp extracts also possess properties that help reduce spasticity,24 neurodegeneration
and inflammation.25 Another interesting factor of hemp seed is that its oil is up to 80 percent
rich in polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFAs).
It is also an exceptionally rich source of the essential fatty acids (EFAs)—linoleic
acid (omega-6) and alpha-linolenic acid (omega-3).26 All these make hemp seed an effective natural
treatment option for multiple sclerosis.
10.
Vitamin D The sunshine vitamin has been widely acknowledged
as beneficial and needed in promoting bone health.
It has also garnered attention for other health benefits like reducing the risk of chronic
diseases like cancer, autoimmune diseases, and cardiovascular disease.27 Studies have
also shown that vitamin D supplementation can not only diminish the symptoms of multiple
sclerosis but also be used to prevent the disease in patients genetically predisposed
to multiple sclerosis.28 11.
DHA DHA, or docosahexaenoic acid, is an omega-3
fatty acid found in vegetable oils, fatty fish like salmon, tuna, and mackerel, or omega-3
dietary supplements.
Since research has shown that DHA deficiencies are associated with the neuronal function,
cancer, and inflammation, DHA supplements may help protect the central nervous system.
Its anti-inflammatory properties and ability to promote brain health may prove useful for
people with MS.29 12.
Magnesium Magnesium is crucial for a variety of bodily
functions.
Research shows that magnesium deficiencies may also be associated with myelin damage,
leading to multiple sclerosis and a number of other chronic and progressive conditions.30
Using magnesium supplements and opting for a diet that is rich in natural sources of
magnesium like leafy greens, nuts, whole wheat, fish, etc. can be helpful in preventing a
deficiency that can aggravate MS symptoms.
A combination of all or some of these natural treatments can definitely bring down the severity
of multiple sclerosis symptoms and manage the condition effectively.
Try them now.
