Shelter, food, medicine, now tell your child which one of these they will get today.
It may seem unimaginable but those are the decisions forced upon thousands
of North Texas women every day.
No mother should ever have to make that choice.
"WiNGS" is an organization that's actually a 110 years old this year
and we started out as a National Organization helping women and really,
we stayed agile, we would change and evolve as women's needs changed and evolved
So January 2016, we branched out on our own and we became "WiNGS" here in Dallas and
our focus still continued to be helping women lift themselves out of poverty.
What drives me to work every day is believing that everyone should have
an opportunity to live the life that many of us lead, and so I like that we're in a
place where we're making that possible for more and more people.
Like most Americans I was living okay but I was still living check to check
it would always be that I wouldn't have enough money to pay my water bill and so
my water would get cut off and I started filling up, you know, old milk jugs
full of water so when our water got cut off we could flush our toilet.
We often make the analogy of doing those jigsaw puzzles right, you know, it's already
complicated so imagine doing that puzzle without the box cover and here we give
them, this is what it looks like.
Women that come to us, come to us from all different walks of life, and so again
speaks to no matter what you're trying to accomplish and where you start will
help you get to whatever it is that you define as success and as your goal.
So, our programs are accessible to most women, within our programs that help you
build your assets and increase your credit, reduce your debt, those types of
services we've got one or two other financial products that also have some
income guidelines but all of our education classes our coaching classes
are open to anyone who wants to come in and make some positive change.
Financial coaching is very different from advising and counseling we believe with our full
being that people are the experts in their own lives
so we're not here to tell them what to do we don't know what they value what's
important to them so if financial coach is skilled in asking questions not to
solve the problem but to work with the person.
I think a big way to make an impact
is when women pay it forward so, they come to "WiNGS" they achieve what
they want to achieve they go out and then they cycle back and they become
instead of a member, a teacher, a coach, a business partner.
So, when I first started I had two events, and since "WiNGS" since I graduated from
the class 4 years later we've had 30-plus events this year and you know
when I look back in my plan I had I want to do this, and I want to do that, and
I want to do it and now I've done all those things.
One time I was here in training and I walked in
to this hallway and Jennifer Ware, said Hope I want you to meet someone
I said: Hi, I'm Hope King, he said: You own black tie babysitting
and I said: I do and he turned out to be the founder of Southwest Airlines.
I would never had the opportunity to meet someone at that level where
I was in my business and that was because of "WiNGS" not anybody else,
not any marketing, not any social media, it was "WiNGS."
It's really important that we focus on women because women are historically
disproportionately impacted by poverty, the one thing that I would want everyone
to know about "WiNGS" is that our doors at 2603 in Wood Road are open to you
no matter who you are, no matter what challenges you face, call us, come
be a part of our services, either as a member or as a volunteer
we'd love to have you come be a part of us.
