Humans of Boston - Duration: 6:41.

My name is Donna Brown.

My name is Rupal.

Hi, my name is LaWaun Curry.

Hi, I'm Emma Walters.

Hello, my name is Viviana Cataño.

Being apart of a vibrant city with an important literary and cultural and historical significance.

Being an active and an engaged community member.

Engagement can be at various levels.

There's obviously things we can do at the local government level at city hall but also

with the local community and local community groups.

I guess there's something in the water.

Because it means awesome.

Well, awesomeness.

Being a Bostonian is very special.

So when I say that there's something in the water, you can tell by our sports teams.

I'm a big sports fan.

From our Bruins, to the Revolution, to the Boston Red Sox, and of course our mighty,

mighty Celtics.

You can tell that there's something about our sports teams and the enthusiasm that it

brings upon the city.

It means being actively engaged in your community.

Loving what's available here and just kind of being, giving back and loving where you

are.

You get to enjoy a wonderful beach.

It means that you get to grow and live in a community with a lot of people that really

care about the community and who try to make it better.

I think being a Bostonian is being a part of a really long, wonderful American history.

And also looking to the future both for the country and for Boston itself.

For example, for my kids to be born in Boston, for my kids to be Bostonians, because I wanted

them to be part of this cultural tradition, this rich tapestry of literature, art and

history.

You get to enjoy diversity in food.

You can enjoy American food, amazing Italian food, Cambodian, Moroccan, Colombian, Thai,

to name a few.

So it's a great place to live and raise a family.

It's always been a leader in discovery, whether it's health care, or education, or so many

other innovations here.

Boston is looking forward and at the same time, it's looking back.

Boston's architecture is one of the things that draws people here.

It's one of the few special places like that in America where you can see buildings every

day from the American Revolution.

Cambridge is a rich and vibrant community.

We have a very active city hall with very concerned politicians, but also very mindful

and engaged citizens who take part of the discussions at city hall on a regular basis.

I'm not really all that into baseball, but working in Kenmore Square, right across the

street from Fenway Park, helps.

It helps me feel a part of this communal phenomenon that Bostonians have.

No matter where you are from Boston, whether you work here, whether you live here, you

have that.

You've got that in common.

And that's something.

A lot of other cities don't have that fervent bond.

So we not only have the youngest population, but we're a really arts and culture based

neighborhood.

We're dubbed Allston Rock City, so we have a bunch of music venues.

We have an incredible amount of public art.

We're really young.

We're really diverse.

When people are in need, whether it's a triumph or a tragedy, if there's a family need, people

come together and raise money for that family.

If they've suffered from illness, or if their house caught fire, or whatever.

So there's that caring for each other that's still here in this neighborhood, even as it

changes rapidly.

We are also very welcoming to the immigrants and other diverse communities that exist in

Cambridge and nearby as well.

I, myself, am an immigrant and consider Cambridge my home.

My hope is that people would see Revere and see the amazing things and the good things

that are happening here.

Our public schools, our wonderful beach, where it's free to park or you can come on the train.

So I've lived in South Boston since 1989 and my personal experience of the neighborhood

has been so positive.

I raised my children here.

My husband and I bought our first home here in 1989.

We're really impressed with how tight knit the neighborhood was, but yet still felt welcomed

by really wonderful neighbors who cared about this community.

Taking ownership, and being family rooted...Boston has a lot of that in all of its towns.

And that's why I'm glad to be at where I'm at today, helping families grow and nurture

themselves because Boston, as diverse as it is, really helped me grow and be the person

that I am.

I really think that I am a person that can kind of mesh with everybody in any town that

I go into, any state that I go into, any continent that I go into.

Because I come from Boston, I can represent Boston and hope to build a relationship with

anybody across the country and across the world.

Get to know your neighborhoods and your budding neighborhoods and do it in simple ways.

So, shop at local shops, get to know your neighbors, introduce yourself if you have

neighbors next door.

Spend time in the neighborhood.

I think anything after that, that idea of being civically engaged comes naturally because

you've learned to love and care about your neighborhood and care about the history and

the future of the neighborhood.

I like being here.

I think, you know, every city has something unique to offer.

So, not just Cambridge, but whatever city or town you live in.

I think it's very important for everyone to be very locally aware and locally involved.
