The other day I attended a cupping.

On my to the event, I had to do a quick search because I had no idea what a cupping was.

So for those of you like me, who are unfamiliar with this term, allow me to explain.

A cupping is a professional method of observing the tastes and aromas of coffee.

You pour grounds into a cup of boiling water. Hang out and let it sit for a minute...

then you scrape off the top layer of the grounds and you give it a good sniff.

Then you take your spoon and loudly slurp the coffee.

Since coffee beans embody telltale flavours from each region they are grown

cuppers will often attempt to figure out where the beans came from.

Kind of like your Aunty will do with her $15 bottle of wine at Christmas.

But now that you know what cupping is, lets head down and have a word with Alisha Esmail, who's roasting

ethically sourced coffee beans right here in Saskatchewan, with her company, Road Coffee Co.

I've been obsessed with the coffee industry since I was a kid for some reason and I knew

I knew wanted to work in coffee even though my background was in development work.

I love to travel and when I was overseas I would often hang out on coffee and tea plantations,

getting to know farmers and their kids and how coffee was grown as a fruit and eventually

shipped all around the world as little green coffee beans.

So I almost started a couple different non-profits to work with farmers but eventually decided

to start a for profit company and use that as a platform for social change.

We get our coffee from around the world. We have three direct trades with Guatemala, Burundi and Laos

and then we also work with a couple amazing coffee buyers that work with farmers to bring in coffees.

As we grow, we hope to work with farmers to develop their communities whether it's healthcare,

education, clean water, whatever their community specifically needs.

I moved home a few years ago to start Road Coffee based out of Saskatchewan and a lot

of people ask me, why are you moving to Saskatchewan?

Well, not just because I was born and raised here, but Saskatchewan I realized, was a great

place to start a company.

There's so much opportunity here, there's amazing support and I've been blown away by

the entrepreneurial community in this city and even the support from other companies.

It's been absolutely amazing.

I'm excited to continue to grow this Saskatchewan based company, we're primarily a roasting company.

We supply restaurants, we supply cafes and offices with coffee, and it's amazing.

I didn't think I was actually going to get that.
