How to find purpose in life and be happy? Top Boston doctor and author - Duration: 4:55.

- In your talks you often quote Mark Twain: "The two most important days in your life

are the day when you are born and the day you find out why."

So how to find one's purpose in life? Dr. Anton Titov MD

- Yes, so this is a great question!

So let's talk a little bit about happiness and then living with purpose.

So my next book, which will be published this December by St. Martin's Press, I've written

with a colleague and a friend.

Her name is Gina Vild.

She is Associate Dean for External Communications and Chief Communication Officer at Harvard

Medical School.

And the whole book is about happiness and living with purpose.

But when we were coming up with the title, we discovered with our literary agent Trident

Media in New York that there are more than 200,000 books with the word "happiness" in

the title.

In our book, we are putting much more focus on living with purpose.

So we came up with the idea to have a little play on Mark Twain's quote.

And Mark Twain once said: "The two most important days in your life are the day you're born

and the day you find out why."

So the title of our book is going to be "The two most important days", then the subtitle

"How to find your purpose and live a healthy and happier life."

So my reflections and some of my research and discussion with amazing colleagues, some

philosophers, is that there are four traits of the happiest people on this planet.

They include having a cadre of good friends.

Your friends are your chosen family.

Robert Louis Stevenson said, "A friend is a gift that you give to yourself."

Kahlil Gibran said, "Friendship is a sweet responsibility, never an opportunity."

James Rohn, a best-selling author has said, "You're the average of the five people you

spend the most time with."

So select your friends and celebrate everything, small or big, with your friends.

That's number 1.

Second trait is ability to forgive.

Nelson Mandela served 27 years in prison.

When he was released, he's asked a question, "Mr. Mandela, do you have a resentment or

bitterness against your captors?"

He does the most beautiful answer.

He said, "I have no bitterness, I have no resentment.

Resentment is like drinking poison and then hoping it will kill your enemies.

It will only kill you."

The third [trait of happy people] is a take from Albert Schweitzer, Nobel laureate of

1952.

He got the Nobel Peace Prize, he was a physician, theologian, humanitarian.

And he once said, "I don't know, what your destiny will be, but one thing I'm certain

of: The ones amongst you who will be truly happy are those who have sought and found

how to serve."

So look at medicine.

We are in that amazing profession, where we can be of service every single day, whether

we are on the wards or we're doing research, we're doing public policy.

So I've distilled it into three Fs: Friends, Forgiveness, For others.

But there's a fourth one, and it begins with the letter G.

And it's not God.

It's Gratitude.

If we express gratitude on a regular basis, you'll be happy.

So those are the four keys for happiness.

But in order to have sustained happiness, one has to find and live one's purpose in

life.

And once you do that, it will resonate for you.

And we can all come to that - either by thinking about it, or sometimes one witnesses is something

very stark, jolting, and negative.

And then one has the courage and the fortitude to say, "You know what?

This is unacceptable!

I'm going to make a difference."

And I can tell you many stories about some amazing people who've found their purpose

in life by first witnessing a tragedy.

It's a wonderful quote by Mark Twain and it's so true.

We are definitely looking forward to seeing your book!

When does it get out?

- December 26, St. Martin's Press.

- This is definitely is going to be very interesting book!

- Thank you!

NBA's balance of power again shifts West, which bodes well for Boston and Philadelphia - Duration: 8:53.

The back-to-back NBA champion Golden State Warriors are the rulers of the league until proven otherwise

But there has been a seismic shift in the balance of power in the NBA after LeBron James decided to join the Lakers in the uber-competitive Western Conference, leaving the Cleveland Cavaliers tattered and an Eastern Conference up for grabs

Advertisement  Does James, who agreed to a four-year, $154-million deal on Sunday, alone make the Lakers title contenders?  James had reigned supreme in the East the last eight seasons, taking the Miami Heat and the Cavaliers each to four consecutive NBA Finals

Now that he has bolted, the pathway out of the East should be easier for the talented Boston Celtics and rising Philadelphia 76ers

"I think there are a bunch of outstanding teams in the Western Conference. Obviously, the champs will be favored," said Mark Jackson, the venerable NBA analyst for ESPN and ABC

"But we saw last year it wasn't an easy road for them and the West has only gotten better since then

"With LeBron gone, it absolutely opens the door in the East. I mean, the door was shut for eight years

So it opens the door. Everybody sounds like they are ready to take the jump. The question is who is going to take the jump

It'll be real interesting. I think with a healthy Kyrie Irving, I think the Celtics are the favorite

But that doesn't mean it's going to translate. I think it's wide open in the East

" LeBron James comes to the Lakers: complete coverage »  The Warriors have a star-studded group with Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant, Draymond Green and Klay Thompson as well as free-agent center DeMarcus Cousins, who agreed to a one-year deal Monday

The Rockets have two stars of their own in James Harden and Chris Paul, who agreed to re-sign on Sunday

They will be hurt by the loss of Trevor Ariza, a reliable defensive stalwart and three-point shooter who agreed to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns

Paul George agreed to re-sign with Oklahoma City and will form a dynamic trio with guard Russell Westbrook and forward Carmelo Anthony

Rookie Donovan Mitchell led the surprising Utah Jazz to the second round of the Western Conference playoffs last season

Portland, New Orleans and Minnesota were also playoff teams along with San Antonio while Denver finished at 46-36, one game out of the eighth spot and three out of third

"The power has definitely been in the West more so the last few years," free-agent guard Jamal Crawford said

It has been assumed by many that the Lakers with James will join the top powers in the league sooner than later

la-sp-lebron-james-lakers-updates Meet the greatest player to wear a Lakers jersey: LeBron James By Bill Plaschke Jul 02, 2018 | 3:18 PM  They agreed to deals with veterans Rajon Rondo, JaVale McGee and Lance Stephenson and as well as agreed to re-sign Kentavious Caldwell-Pope

They'll join the Lakers' young core of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma and Josh Hart

"It puts them in the discussions with anybody," Jackson said. "I don't think they are done

So that'll be the interesting thing to me. You bring back Caldwell-Pope. He has toughness and size and versatility at that position

You're going to get Lance Stephenson, who has toughness size and a guy that can make plays also

I don't think they are done. If they can go and add even more, whether it be Kawhi (Leonard) or whoever else, they are certainly a legitimate championship contender

" Advertisement  James essentially delivered the Cavaliers a championship over the defending-champion Warriors in 2016, but Cleveland lost to them in 2017 - '18

Without James, the Cavaliers are expected to struggle in the East.  The Celtics get back Irving (left knee) and Gordon Hayward (broken left leg) from the injured list and will team them with savvy veteran Al Horford and rising young stars Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum to a team that lost to James and the Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference finals

The 76ers have stars Joel Embiid and Ben Simmons on a team that lost to the Celtics in the semifinals

Toronto, which led the East with the second-best record in the league at 59-23, can't get past the second round of the playoffs

"To me, it's Golden State and then right under Golden State is going to be Boston," Phoenix Suns forward Jared Dudley said

"I think Boston with what they bring back, with Hayward and Kyrie to go along with Tatum and Brown, just them four alone, you went up

"But basically, no one cares about the Eastern Conference. Everyone respects Boston and everyone thinks Philly is too young

The West is so stacked that they might reform the league and say, 'Hey, we want the top teams in the playoffs

' LeBron James coming to the Lakers did that."

'To lead with compassion - meditate!' Top Boston doctor - on leadership (6) - Duration: 5:44.

- You study leadership and you have a huge experience in medicine.

Leadership is about taking the right decisions at the right time. Dr. Anton Titov MD

So from a patient perspective, when a family or person encounters a new medical problem

in the family or with herself or himself, what can а family do to navigate the medical

problem and find the best solution?

What are common mistakes to avoid?

That's a great question.

I think before we even talk about what can the family do, I think what we as the people

in health care delivery need to do is that we need to be very very compassionate.

We need to cultivate compassion.

And you can cultivate leadership and you can cultivate compassion by a very simple technique.

And the technique is meditation.

And if we meditate on a regular basis, ideally twice a day - once in the morning, second

time later in the afternoon or early evening, then these things happen automatically.

That compassion grows, kindness grows, creativity grows, fluency grows.

We are better communicators.

So I would encourage everyone to at least explore meditation.

I have a saying "You should meditate once a day, and if you don't have time to do that,

you should meditate twice a day."

Because then you really need it.

So we as caregivers need to be very kind, and the Talmud says: "Compassion is the highest

form of wisdom."

So any interaction we have with patients and their families, it has to start at that level

of compassion and communication.

Drawing diagrams, explaining things.

If you still see doubt in their mind, just say to them, "If this was my relative, if

this was my brother, if this was my father, if this was my mother I would be recommending

exactly what I'm recommending to you as a consultant."

Once you do that - it immediately - it happened so many times - the family will feel relieved

and will trust you.

And the most important thing that people look for in somebody with authority, somebody in

a leadership position, there are four things: Stability, Empathy, Trust and Hope.

Stability, empathy, trust and hope.

And Napoleon was once asked to define a leader, and he said, "It's a very simple definition:

a leader is a dealer in hope."

One of the best things that patients can do is have family meetings and say: "You know,

the doctor will be coming later this morning or afternoon to visit mom, or aunt, or dad,

what questions should we ask?"

And then write them down, because what happens is when the physician comes, he or she often

stands at the foot end of the bed.

The family and the patient think he's going to turn on his heels and walk away.

He could stand for 20 minutes and they think he spent two minutes.

I learned 30 years ago, maybe even longer, from a colleague of mine, Dr. Mark Peppercorn,

He said: "When you go for rounds, pull up a chair and sit down.

You could spend five minutes and the patients will think that you gave them all the time.

And before you leave, ask the question, 'Do you have any questions for me?'

You know what, you may think of questions as I walk out, or when the family comes to

visit you this evening.

You have a piece of paper and a pen, write them down.

When I come later this evening or tomorrow morning, we'll talk about it."

I think we need to do that, and we need to empower the families to feel very comfortable

looking at somebody in authority and asking them questions.

And amongst the questions I encourage my patients and friends of mine, who are dealing with

a serious medical issue is to ask their doctor, surgeon and radiotherapist: "What would you

do if this is a member of your family?"

And that will hopefully give you the right answer and a very honest answer.

So this is very important!

When I spoke to Professor Lawrence Cohn, a pioneer in cardiac surgery, he said: "Most

importantly, you have to ask the doctor all the questions that are on your mind.

Don't hold back and ask the hard questions."

- Yes, but write them down, because I think people forget and we all do that.

And sometimes you get intimidated with this professor who walks and surrounded by fellows

and residents and students and nurses and there's this whole big group.

And you might feel intimidated and then you might forget and get distracted.

So write the questions down,

- It's very important.

Can leaders change themselves? - Top Boston doctor & author on leadership (4) - Duration: 6:13.

- Leadership. Dr. Anton Titov MD

You wrote a best-selling book "Leadership by example", and you gave, to wide acclaim,

a lecture more than hundred times around the world that's called "Leadership for the 21st

century: the tenets of leadership".

And you said that "Great managers do things right, and great leaders do the right things"

[Peter Drucker].

But a great leader can also take the country backwards or take a business backwards, not

necessarily forward.

And there are many examples, where strong leaders ruin their businesses and even their

countries.

Is leadership a static quality?

Can leaders change where they lead to and how they lead?

Can leaders change themselves?

Or must you always change leaders to change the direction, be it a country or a business?

- Terrific, great questions!

So I've always been fascinated by leaders and great leadership moments in history.

I think we should first start by maybe defining leadership.

And I would define leadership as the ability to articulate a vision and walk the path such

that it inspires other people to rise above the banality and strife of their common day

existence and achieve a higher and common goal.

The title "leader" does not bestow upon anyone leadership qualities.

So somebody can be the CEO, they can be a Chancellor, they can be the Vice President,

they can be the President, they can be a Senator, they can be a Congressman, they can be the

Prime Minister - they can have all these amazing leadership titles - but they're not leaders.

The title does not bestow upon you leadership qualities.

And one can be an amazing leader without ever having a title, right?

The definition of a great leader is somebody who makes himself or herself progressively

redundant.

They make themselves useless and the followers take over and do a better job.

So leadership is a fascinating topic, it's a very dynamic topic.

It turns out that leaders are not necessarily born.

Everyone can cultivate the elements of leadership.

And in my book and in my talks, I talk about the ten tenets of leadership.

The quote that you mentioned earlier, we need both managers and leaders.

And one can be an amazing manager but not a good leader.

One can be a great leader and not a good manager.

So this is Peter Drucker, the management guru, who said, "Managers do things right, leaders

do the right things".

I had a discussion with Dipak Jain, he is a legendary individual who was the Dean of

the Kellogg School of Management in Illinois, one of the top five MBA programs in the world.

Once Time business magazine rated it to be a number one school in the world.

And then he was also the Dean at INSEAD in Europe, which is also one of the top 5 - 10

business schools in the world.

And I asked Dipak, I said, "Dipak, what's the difference between managers and leaders?"

And he had a wonderful definition.

He said: "Managers are for today, leaders are for tomorrow."

They have a compelling vision of the future, they can articulate it and get their followers

to achieve the goal, work together.

Leader leads from behind.

So we can cultivate leadership in many different ways.

In my book I talk about the 10 tenets of leadership, and when I give this talk at transplant centers,

surgical Grand Rounds, medical Grand Rounds, radiology CEO clubs - different groups, people

often say "How can we incorporate this?

What you've just taught us".

And I say "Take one of the tenets, make it a goal in your company, make it a goal in

your transplant center, - that for the next week, you'll be a better listener.

That is the first tenet of leadership by example.

L is for listening.

And then at the end of a week share your experience.

The following week: empathy.

You're just going to be more kind and more compassionate.

The following week have a little 10 minute meeting and discuss, how did it feel to be

kinder to your patients, to the families.

And then you will start to live it by example.

There's an amazing story of Gandhi, where this lady walks from a village about 40 miles

with a twelve-year-old son and she says "Gandhi-ji, my boy, my son eats too much sugar, he's gaining

a lot of weight.

Would you please tell him not to eat sugar, it's not good for him".

Gandhi looks at the boy, looks at the mother, and he says: "Come back in three weeks."

So they go back to the village.

Three weeks later they again march forty miles.

They arrive and Gandhi looks at the boy and he says: "Son, don't eat sugar - it's not

good for you, you're gaining too much weight".

The boy says "Gandhi-ji, from this moment I will stop eating sugar".

And he starts to leave the room.

The mother stays behind and she says: "Gandhi-ji, thank you for saying that to my son.

But can I ask you a question, we were here three weeks ago and you could have said the

same thing to my son then!"

And Gandhi whispers into her ear: "At that time I had not given up sugar."

So you have to lead by example!

- That's a fascinating story, it's remarkable!

- Yeah, remarkable!

But Gandhi led by example and that's what the great leaders do.

- In big questions and in small...

- Yes
