Auto news on Youtube Oct 1 2018

hi friends welcome back to where in the world is Leah Jane and today we are

traveling from the depths of my ability to overthink because I have been tagged

and here's what I realize at first I'm like yes because someone noticed me and

then I have to answer the questions and I'm sitting there like you know like so

many options but at the same time all the books I have ever known have now

flown out of my head but you know I just got right through that and I'm ready to

answer the questions now before I get into them I want to think Snow White and

the seven shelves and bookemjenna

for tagging me if you have not checked

out their channel just like pause this video real quick and head right on over

because they are both such lovely genuine people who put up some really

unique content so yes we are doing the coffee book tag and I am drinking water

because I don't drink coffee unless it's an emergency

so just pretend that I'm cool enough to drink coffee and let's talk about books

question number one black coffee well name a series that is tough to get into

but has hard core fans definitely The Wheel of Time series like I have been to

a number of writing groups and book club discussions where people get into these

really intense conversations I have never read it because I tell myself I

haven't at the time but everyone I know who has read it is like Leah no you must

so yeah definitely that series people just their whole lives around that

series Two is peppermint mocha and it's to name

a series like it's more popular in the winter or like a festive time of year

the ones I can think of are like the Grinch The Snow Queen I think of those

the fairy tale around the snow queen is my favorite

and now that I think about it one interpretation of the story is about a

girl who tries to change a boy who suddenly becomes very cruel and

aggressive not the best message so I'm just gonna not think about that anymore

let's just move on to something more nice okay uh how about some hot

chocolate what is your favorite children's book so I have a two first

for anyone who has a young readers out there I'm going to say Stellaluna this

book was my favorite as a child it is about a young fruit bat who gets

separated from her mother and is sort of adopted by these three hatchling birds

who think she is so strange and quirky but try to accept her and teach her the

ways of being a bird anyway I think it's probably where my love of bats now stems

from the second one is the dealing with Dragons series Cimorene was everything

I wanted in a princess as a young girl she was strong and brave and a little

bit defiant I loved that she spent the books learning new things defending

dragons and witches going on adventures and fighting off all the hapless Knights

that thought they could save her or that she needed saving

it's the perfect book for someone who's just getting into chapter books or maybe

even a little bit after that you have a young reader who likes a little bit of

silliness some adventures and a really strong female character then you might

want to gift this book to them double shot of espresso name a book that kept

you on the edge of your seat from start to finish this one is like a hard one

some books that really kept me engrossed the whole story are crooked Kingdom my

current read for a muse of fire I am loving this book and finally this one is

going to be a little unconventional but Aurora by Kim Stanley Robinson Aurora is

about this group of people living on a multi generation ship that is being sent

out to terraform another earth-like planet it follows all

of their challenges while they're on the ship I think a lot of people are going

to disagree with me because Kim Stanley Robinson has a tendency to put all of

the things that he's learned while researching a book into the book like he

just loves hashtag cool science facts so it can be a little slow at points for

people I will say I've definitely seen that more with his other books but this

one I could not put it down all I will say for the people who have a read this

book is ship is the best ship no one can convince me otherwise ship has a very

special place in my heart Starbucks named a book that you see

everywhere I still see homegoing by yaa gyasi

I've really loved this book so I can see why it's popular the second is fear by

Bob Woodward again DC I think I'm probably the only person in this city

who has not read it yet that hipster coffee shop give an indie book a

shout-out wow this is a real gap for me because it means that I trust publishing

as an institution to choose which stories I should read um and we all know

publishing is imperfect so let me think about this I feel like a lot of the

stories that I read that aren't formally published are just somewhere online like

through your fiction Pressman that was a thing tumblr there's one tumblr user in

particular we're going to be highlighting and a video that's coming

up who is such a versatile writer I just realized I forgot worm aka the longest

web serial ever which launched while those careers so I guess we can count

that although the boy needs to learn to edit 2,000 years later. Did any other

early online reading nerds and read Worm please let me know I feel like it's

an experience people bond over oops I accidentally got decaf named a book you

were expecting more from and I'm gonna say Magonia I picked it up because Neil

Gaiman blurbed it to be frank the back description didn't do justice

the more brilliant aspects of the story namely some of the world's building the

introduction of these fantastical elements that I hadn't seen in that way

before but I think the fantastical elements are probably the only thing I

liked oh don't hit me the story felt choppy the pacing was off and the

characters were underdeveloped name a book that was bitter and sweet but

ultimately satisfying I'm gonna say never let me go by Kazuo Ishiguro and I

know this one is also gonna be controversial because it was a very

polarizing book for some people it was grueling felt like hundreds of tiny

moments that didn't quite connect the voice of the main character felt

pretentious and some of the interpersonal interactions felt

melodramatic I think kind of see where they're coming from I can see why it

would be read like that when I read it about eight years ago it was more

touching to me the little moments build it to the climax in a way that was

satisfying to me and the question that Kazuo Ishiguro was trying to get us to

ask ourselves about our humanity and what it means to be human and how we do

humanize others really struck a chord the story was poignant

and heartbreaking and I still think about it from time to time though I have

not reread it and those are all the questions if you have watched this whole

thing thank you so much for watching now it is my turn to tag a few people I am

going to tag Kathy Trithardt Castle library Grace Mari and borderline

bookends these are all lovely people and I am just really curious to see how

they're gonna answer these questions so tag you're it and I think that is all

I've got to say about that so I hope you have a lovely day and until next time

keep traveling bye

Grown Respectfully - Nescafé helps coffee farmers like Eduardo thrive - Duration: 1:17.

Maybe life wanted to teach me a lesson. I lost my job, was divorced and I had to leave my children.

Not even the sun could warm me. And to make things worse my grandpa passed away.

I reached rock bottom, and held on to the only thing I had left.

The promise I had made that I was going to take care of his estate, his fields, his coffee - the legacy of our family.

At the beginning it was very hard.

Plants didn't grow and there was a drought. I thought I wasn't going to make it.

Until the Nescafe Plan.

It was the best decision I could have made in my life. The Nescafe agronomists taught me how to manage the business,

improve the crops... And they gave me advice on how to improve the estate too. Now I even help other coffee farmers.

The most valuable thing is that I became a better human being and a better parent. Now I can be closer, to raise them.

Most importantly, I could keep the promise I made to my grandpa.

Goodlad Clothing Coffee and Cut - Duration: 7:19.

Hey, everyone. It's Craig Veroni with RE/MAX Masters Realty. It's been a while

since I showcased anything new in North Vancouver and I thought you know what,

it's about time I did because there are so many new places here in North Van and

I want to share them with you. We're standing in front of one of them today

it's called Goodlad Clothing Coffee and Cut. That's right

gentlemen you can now come to Lower Lonsdale, get some fantastic clothes, have

a coffee, an amazing coffee by the way, and get an incredible haircut here all

under one roof. We're going inside to meet the owner Shane Meier in just a

second and if you recognize him it's probably

because you've seen him somewhere on film or television.

He's a former actor and now the proud owner of this amazing place. So, let's go

in and meet with Shane.

My name is Shane Meier. Well, it's called Goodlad Coffee Clothing and Cut.

We're like the triple threat of North Vancouver. We do we do coffee. We do clothing and then we do barber

services as well. So, our main our main backbone is clothing basically but we got

got the coffee bar behind me and then the barbershop in the front to do to kind

of cater to the to every gentleman's needs. One-stop shop.

I understand that you lived in LA for a while and the concept for this store was born out of

what you saw down there is that correct?

Yeah they, down in Los Angeles the shopping experience is completely different than than it is in Canada.

I don't know why. I never could understand that. You go into these stores

you really kind of feel like you're you're doing more than just shopping.

There's restaurants attached to a lot of them. Fred Segal off Melrose is legendary for that.

I took a little parts of that and there's a couple other little

smaller boutique stores on La Brea which is kind of the fashion district now in

Los Angeles in Hollywood and a lot of them have little kind of Scotch bars off

to the side or a bourbon bar kind of like a little speakeasy. Really, I'm like

real man cave type things and I brought a little bit of that.

I think that that good men's clothing store should really cater to the to the gentleman

and and do everything from haircuts to shaves to selling apothecary

hair gels you know body lotions, that kind of thing. So, yeah stole stole a

little bit of what I what I saw on LA and brought it back up here.

The business partners are Chris Martin he has a clothing store at himself in South Surrey - White Rock

called Howard clothing. And then Jason Overbo of Brooklyn clothing which is

arguably one of the best clothing stores. I think, for denim anyways, in Vancouver.

Two of those guys and myself joined together and and joined forces and

opened Goodlad Clothing.

My name is Jason. I am the owner of Brooklyn clothing. We are a men's clothing store that started in Yaletown in 2003.

One day we were talking to Shane and he was like man, I kind of want to do my own thing.

And, he's such a great guy. He has such an amazing work work ethic that

I can't imagine anyone that I would rather partner with.

I think it's a great partnership. I'm really excited about the space. It's unlike anything that exists in Vancouver

right now and I'm just really excited for the next six months and to see how it goes.

Now I partnered up with Mike. Mike Hong from Coo Coo coffee. He does uh, he's got a

coffee shop in in Yaletown and he's running the coffee section.

Yeah, my name is Michael Hong. I am the barista for this beautiful premise.

I hooked up with Shane. He is the owner of this beautiful shop and he asked me to,

if I want to operate this coffee site. So, here I am.

I thought it was a fantastic idea. Crazy. Well let's give a try. It's very LA style and well, you know, how can I say no

to an opportunity like this?

And then Christopher Glenn is my barber and he's

got years and years of experience as a barber and a hair stylist so you know

I guess they consider us all that the good lads.

My name is Christopher Glenn. Barber at Goodlad Coffee Clothing Cut.

How did I get so lucky to be involved in this? I was at a barber shop downtown in Gastown. Did a small tour of

duty at Vickery barber. Jason Overbo who owns Brooklyn clothing Co is one of the investors in this.

He's an old motorcycle mate of mine so he had called me to ask ask my advice on

how you open a barber shop and how that works and the cost associated and

services etc and he pitched the idea and I loved it so much that yeah I I mean

obviously I had to right? To bring something different to the barbering

experience is pretty rare so this is a chance to do something different and

that really had me. I knew with him being involved that they were gonna do this

properly and it takes quite a bit to pull this off correctly.

So the story of how you came to name this store is an amazing one would you mind sharing that with everyone?

it's getting a lot of attention and and so be it, it's it's a great story.

I was having a really hard time trying to name the store. I couldn't

name it. It took it took almost the better part of a year and a half to name

it. Nothing was clicking and my business partners kept saying don't worry, when

you see it you'll see it you'll just know. It'll click and you'll see it and

ironically enough I was doing 23 and me. The DNA swapping and stuff and I had

gotten some information from my aunt and my mom and her sisters about who our

great-grandfather, who our ancestors are, where they came from, how they got to Canada.

Well, my great-great grandfather his name was James Goodlad and I looked

at the the name Goodlad and I was like that's the perfect name for a men's

store. Like that's that's it. And I took a, I actually took a

screenshot of it and sent it to Jason my business partner and he messaged me

right away and he said dude, just call the lawyers. Get it. Make sure that it's you

know make sure that you you're allowed to get it and and that's what it was.

It's very simple man we're we're denim and anything that goes with denim

t-shirts, sweaters, hoodies, good quality American-made denim. We source all of our

stuff ethically which means we're buying it from either Europe or Japan or

preferably Canada. We'd like to support locals. So, yeah anything then anything

that goes with denim and we have everything from boots to and I love the

fact that now we're we're really expanding into the Apothecary side of

the hair gels and the pomades and the face lotions and beard balms and all

that. So, anything that kind of is a real man, like we even we even we have

like you know baseball bats and stuff for the man cave they could put them on

the mantle and this little conversation pieces that kind of thing that guys like

to chat about.

and you know like I said I've always had a kind of an eye for fashion and I enjoy it. It's fun.

I called it, this is work. It's a great place to work. So, let everybody know why they should come

check it out Goodlad Clothing? Just come and hang out man.

Lower Lonsdale definitely needed it. It wasn't even a choice of going anywhere else

I wanted lower Lonsdale. It's a great community. So, come down and we're on the corner of

Esplanade and Chesterfield. It's it's you can't miss us. We're, I've got 75 feet of

window here and I wanted it to be a destination store and so far it is.

So, there you have a gentleman. This is Goodlad Coffee Clothing and Cut.

which you've got to come check out here on the corner of Esplanade and Chesterfield

in lower Lonsdale. You know what? If you live in Vancouver

there's no excuse, you can hop on the sea bus. They're a two minute walk from

Lonsdale Quay. So, come check this place out. You're going absolutely love it.

Thanks for watching. Have a great day and remember this is where you Live, Love, Own Vancouver!

Sugar in your Coffee - Duration: 2:39.

some of them are close to 400 calories for a grande size drink

which for a typical female is a meal. That's breakfast.

And most people are having the drink

plus they're having breakfast

so they really got to think what's going to fill me up, what's going to give me nutrition,

what's going to get me through the day

because 400 calories of sugar probably isn't' going to do it

yes, the milk has a little bit of protein,

but pretty much everything else is sugar.

You look at about 50 g of sugar

for a grande pumpkin spice latte which

compared to the American heart association recommendation

of 26 g a day for women is quite high

so you're already at double from just one drink

one thing people can do is think of it as this is a treat.

This isn't a drink like I have a drink

everyday with this massive amount of sugar.

This is a rare treat.

you can cut down significantly on the sugar if you reduce the size. A lot of people are used to getting

the grandes – cut that in half. Get a

short. Those little 8 oz cups. Really enjoy it.

So a lot of people don't know but they can reduce

instead of going with the typical four pumps in a grande

they can say just do one. Just get a little

taste of the pumpkin spice a little taste of

whatever flavor it is that they want without getting

all that sugar in there.

a lot of people are switching over to artificial sweeteners for weight loss,

decrease the risk of heart disease and diabetes

but most of the research is saying that oh people that drink a lot of

these artificial sweeteners have

increased risk of metabolic syndrome, which is high blood

pressure, high blood sugar, increases the risk of stroke,

heart disease.

The American heart association that 26 g for women. That is equivalent

to about 4 tsp.

so if you think of some of these drinks that

have 50 g of sugar that's 12 tsp

of sugar. So if you were to go make your own

latte, throw in some pumpkin spices

some nutmeg some cinnamon and

throw in some honey it's very unlikely you're going to add

12 tsp of honey to your own homemade concoction

so that's going to be your better bet.

be mindful of what you're doing.

Be mindful of the choices you make.

Be mindful of when you go out and go to a party,

well what food choices do I want to make?

What drink choices do I want to make? Think about it ahead of

time instead of acting impulsively.

Because I think we get into habits where we

are constantly doing the same things and we're

not thinking about why we're doing them and that can be

super helpful for especially for people trying to lose weight
