Qarabag manager questions why Arsenal's Henrikh Mkhitaryan did not travel for Azerbaijan match - Duration: 3:26.

Qarabag manager Gurban Gurbanov has claimed that Henrikh Mkhitaryan's failure to travel with Arsenal for their Europa League clash in Azerbaijan may have been due to security concerns

Speaking in his pre-match press conference ahead of Thursday night's clash with Arsenal, the 46-year-old said that he didn't want politics to affect the match and that his side were not interested in the Armenian or his absence

Questions over whether the former Shakhtar Donetsk, Borussia Dortmund and Manchester United playmaker would travel to Baku, the country's capital, with the rest of the squad have lingered ever since the two clubs were drawn together in the group stage

A long-standing conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan regarding the disputed Nagorno-Karabakh territory has left relations between the the two neighbours remain strained following a history of conflicts and two wars with a ceasefire declared in 1994

The two countries are still technically at war and there have been further clashes between military forces

Armenians are still forbidden entry into Azerbaijan with visitors from other nations also permanently banned from Azerbaijan if they have travelled into the Nagorno-Karabakh region

However, exceptions have been made for sporting events and diplomatic missions, and Mkhitaryan should have faced no formal barriers to entry had he travelled with Arsenal to Baku

The midfielder also chose not to travel with Dortmund to face Azerbaijani Premier League side Gabala in the Europa League in 2015 despite the assurances of UEFA that he be granted the necessary paperwork to make the trip

"I didn't want politics to interrupt the sport but we could not do anything on this issue," said Gurbanov

"But Arsenal tried to save this player but it is not a matter for us if he is coming or not

"If Henrikh Mkhitaryan would come to Azerbaijan it is not the first time, but until now a lot of Armenian sportsmen came to Azerbaijan but it is the choice of Arsenal that they didn't send [him]

Arsenal may be afraid that in front of 60,000 Azerbaijani fans. Mkhitaryan has some pressure and that is why they didn't send Mkhitaryan

Manchester United traded Mkhitaryan to Arsenal in the 2018 January transfer window with Alexis Sanchez moving in the other direction

So far the Gunners have enjoyed the better side of the deal with the Armenian having scored and bagged three assists in the Premier League and Europa League this season compared to the Chilean's meagre return of only one assist and no goals for Jose Mourinho's team
