South Korean researchers have recently discovered that a certain protein plays a pivotal role

in causing cancer to develop in the liver.

With this protein isolated, the team says, new techniques could make liver cancer treatments

more effective.

Cho Sung-min has this story.

Cancer of the liver is the fifth most deadly kind of cancer in the world.

And in Korea, data collected since 2016 show it's the second deadliest here.

And it has a high rate of recurrence.

In fact, experts say up to 70 percent of patients who are successfully treated for liver cancer,

get it again.

Those figures make this recent discovery by local researchers a possible game changer.

A team at Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology said it found a specific protein

called TonEBP that triggers the development and recurrence of liver cancer.

Interestingly, its was first identified in 1999 by Professor Kwon Hyug-moo… who also

led this study.

"TonEBP occurs in body parts with inflammation.

The more the body part is inflamed, the more proteins are found."

According to the study conducted on nearly three hundred liver cancer patients in Korea,

almost all cases have proved a strong correlation between a liver tumor and the protein.

Scientists say TonEBP expression was clearly higher in tumors than in adjacent non-cancerous

tissues in more than 92 percent of patients.

The result is considered significant since the team made the finding by directly testing

on cancerous human tissue… as opposed to numerous cases where experiments are done

on animals.

Professor Kwon says the next step for him and his team is to find out how resistent

the protein is to chemotherapy,... which will enable more effective liver cancer treatments.

Man Utd news: Gareth Bale must escape Real Madrid after 'disgusting treatment' - Thomas

That is the verdict of Bale's Welsh compatriot and former United midfield player Mickey Thomas as uncertainty continues to shroud the winger's future.

Bale declared his need to play "week in, week out" after his match-winning performance as a substitute in Madrid's Champions League triumph against Liverpool.

But the ongoing soap opera that is the Bernabeu took another twist when manager Zinedine Zidane made the shock announcement that he had quit the club.

That decision inevitably fuelled speculation Bale might secure a regular place under a new boss, but Thomas urges his compatriot to rekindle the faith of the United fans and seek fulfilment at Old Trafford.

"The way he's been treated at times has been disgusting" Mickey Thomas It showed how disillusioned Bale has become at the Bernabeu – he was the only member of the Madrid squad not to send a message to Zidane after his exit this week.

Thomas said: "Gareth showed when he came on in the final what a special player he is.

"He has the pace, power and eye for goal that can turn any match.

"He also took the chance to make a statement of intent.

"He wants to play regular first team football and he should be playing regular first team football.

"Over the years Gareth has not had the respect from the club and fans at Madrid that he's deserved.

"The way he's been treated at times has been disgusting.

"They've taken him for granted there.

"At United he would feel wanted and appreciated for the great player he undoubtedly is.".

An eye-watering transfer fee and wage package could be a stumbling block for United or any interested club but Thomas believes personal terms would not be his motivation.

"He's won four Champions League medals and had staggering wages with Madrid, but now I think he needs a new challenge," Thomas said.

"I'm sure money won't be his priority.

"And what better challenge than taking on the mantle of top man for United and putting the club back on top.

"United have long been linked with Bale and signing him would send a clear message of intent to their fans, who have had to watch City not only dominate the Premier League but do so in style.

"A footballer's career is a short one and it would be a waste of Gareth's talent if he had to spend another season waiting to be called from the bench.".
