Drones are becoming more advanced.

They can fly higher, go further, and now, Intel

is working with the Federal Aviation Administration

to shape how drones are utilized.

I'm Stephanie Essin.

Find out how we're breaking new air in this IDC Weekly.

Intel is joining the and other industry participants

to foster innovation and to shape the global standards

and practices for unmanned aircraft systems, like drones.

Intel's assistance builds on last year's foundational work

with the unmanned aircraft system traffic management

trials conducted by NASA and the FAA

to develop and test drone guidelines

for collaborative communications and navigation.

Now, the FAA has initiated a program designed

to explore ways to safely expand cutting-edge drone

operations into the national airspace

by pairing state, local, and tribal governments

with unmanned aircraft operators.

This project is called the Unmanned Aircraft System

Integration Pilot Program.

Recently, in Oklahoma, the Choctaw Nation

hosted a media event to show progress

and to share results of some of the first missions

under this program.

Intel flew night missions using a thermal sensor on the Intel

Falcon 8 Plus drone.

This application could be used to look for lost cattle,

as well to learn more about the habits and tendencies

of local wildlife.

Also, Intel performed the first public demonstration

of Open Drone ID.

This is an open standard that offers a solution for remotely

identifying and tracking unmanned aerial systems.

Future missions with the Choctaw Nation may include drones

for agricultural applications and public safety

and infrastructure inspections, with planned

beyond-visual-line-of-sight operations over people.

The plans are to invest in mobile ground-based

detect-and-avoid radars and advanced weather

infrastructure.

Want to learn more about this collaboration and new ways

drones are taking flight?

Check out the story in the links,

and I'll see you next Monday.
