Italian Vocabulary: How to Order Coffee - Duration: 7:15.

Professor Dave here, let's get a coffee.

Americans love coffee, and so do Italians, who first started drinking it when it was

introduced in the 1500's via Central and South America.

But even though some American coffee conglomerates pretend to borrow from Italian culture, the

two paradigms are completely dissimilar, so let's dispel a few myths that exist, lest

we embarrass ourselves on vacation.

First we will need to learn a little bit about how Italians like their coffee, and then how

to order it properly when you're in Italy.

The first myth is that Italians drink more coffee than Americans.

This certainly is not the case, as even though coffee is ubiquitous, Italians will have at

most two or three per day, one of which may even follow dinner, which is not at all like

the many Americans that have three super-sized coffees before lunch.

Second, there is the myth that Italian espresso has more caffeine then American coffee.

This is also not the case.

Rather, American coffee has more caffeine per ounce than Italian coffee, as Italian

coffee is brewed much faster.

Italian coffee certainly has a more intense flavor, but we mustn't confuse depth of

flavor with strength.

Next, Americans have a beverage that they refer to simply as "coffee", and then

a variety of specialty drinks with Italian names, like espresso and cappuccino and latte.

When in Italy, even though your coffee will seem surprisingly small, do not call it espresso.

They will immediately know that you are a foreigner.

Italians call this caffè because it's the only thing they have, so it's not small to them.

Coffee comes in only one size, and always in an adorable tiny porcelain cup, so no grandes to go.

Next, Italians don't like to mix too many flavors in their coffee.

For this reason, do not seek out fancy concoctions such as Frappuccinos or other innovations.

You will not find them because Italians do not want them, and they look down upon those who do.

This is why Italy is probably the only modern market that Starbucks is utterly unable to

penetrate, because there is literally zero interest in their product.

Once again, we will notice that Italian coffee is what Americans refer to as espresso.

By the way, there is no X in this word, so it's not expresso.

Say it with me one time: espresso.

But this word simply refers to a special brewing method which pushes water through the finely

ground beans at nine bars of atmospheric pressure in just a few seconds.

This is how the so-called "crema" is produced.

This is not to be confused with a product of milk, it is simply the result of carbon

dioxide mixing with the carbohydrates and proteins of the coffee.

Another difference is that Italians don't spend too much time satisfying their coffee needs.

They typically drink it very fast at the counter on the way to work.

For this reason, many small cafes have only a few chairs, or even none.

Instead they simply have small tables at standing height.

You may find a few coffee shops with table service, but you will be charged more for this.

In such a place, do not order at the counter and then try to take your coffee to a table,

this is considered very rude.

Italians also never ask for coffee "da portare via", or to go.

Tourists may do that, and some cafes in touristy areas are starting to cater to it, but you

will not see any Italians doing this.

In terms of the drink itself, Italians prefer caffè nero, which is simply black coffee

with no milk.

In Naples they sometimes add sugar, but this is totally a personal choice.

In addition, cappuccino is a breakfast beverage in Italy, and it will never be ordered by

any native after ten or eleven in the morning at the latest, let alone late at night after

dinner the way Americans sometimes do.

In fact, this behavior might trigger some laughter amont the Italian population.

So let's say you're on vacation and an Italian asks you to go for coffee.

Now that it's time to order, what will you have?

This is equivalent to American espresso.

Same quantity of coffee, but with more water.

With even more water, almost certainly to be avoided.

With half the already small quantity of water.

Double shot.

Not commonly ordered amongst Italians.

This literally means stained with milk.

Definitely more of an after dinner thing.

Served in a glass with sugar and ice, typically in the summertime.

With cocoa powder added.

This will be in a slightly larger cup with the addition of foamy milk.

The name is derived from the color of the order of Capuchin monks, as cappuccino literally

means little hood, a detail in the robes of the monks.

But beware, if you order this, you will get exactly what you asked for, a glass of milk.

The only thing you might be asked is whether you want it cold or warm.

And that concludes your handy guide to ordering and drinking coffee in Italy.

the park, so enjoy!

Ali Omar Ermes: Memories, Diaries and Coffee! - Duration: 13:03.

Assalamu 'Alaikum and good afternoon everybody

as part of memory lane, I thought of coming back to some of my Diaries which is I

had filled with ideas and thoughts and wise sayings and happenings to what I

was doing in art and other social activities and life. Now there I had some

of these Diaries for the last 30-35 years at least. Now some of these Diaries

as I was saying held a lot of material when it comes to the daily activity which I

used to do a lot of it was meetings to different people arranging for

exhibitions, arranging publications, writing sometimes

articles to either two magazines or newspapers or speaking sometimes

in universities or institutions or things of that nature and therefore they

they hold a lot of memory a lot of ideas and names of people and some of that

also to do with what to do with how I am trying to explain my art sometimes or

what my contribution in daily life to do what either my art or my writing or my

ideas when I'm communicating with people or doing things like that.

Some of the things which is I can see now just from the first opening of this

of this piece is that how I'm going to shall we say describe my art how I am going

to describe my art. So this was a first hand first go if you like a try to describe my

art says here what can you call your art style between

than literature and visual like a painting and reads like a book so the

art reads like a book but is visual from a visual point of view like a painting.

So it has these two combinations of art literature in the same time, art in sense

that I am applying the art of art the the ability of showing artistic

expression in artistic way in a painting way and in the same time amusing text

poetry thoughts and ideas different thoughts and ideas just like if you are

reading a book, this is the combination. It has that technique of art and its

power of expression and it has that wisdom of poetry and its grace. So that

is the very much like if you want to call the this is only one a try of

trying to explain how my art combines what kind of combination of my make my

art works when I am displaying it to the world outside. So that is that is just

one of the things which as you can see in one of those pieces of daily in

us could see that that type of thing I usually mix and full of material

and ideas and notes. Some of them are in colors so it becomes easier for me to

recognize and of course you could see that the same somewhere in other places in

other in other and other things so that and carry on like that you have as I

told you there was something like 35 years of a combination of diaries

like this some of them are not the same size some of them are big some others

are smaller but of course the idea the same. Now the next thing I thought that

coming back to reference books, we have a lot of reference books that we are using the art is

based on using very important very well-known reference books either for

text or poetry or prose either in Arabic or in English and some of these are very

well known books around some of them of course in from arab shall we say

poetry books and the rest of it but some of them are English and if we can give an

example like this very important book which is called A Treasury of Traditional Wisdom

which has a lot of a lot of Arabic sayings and Islamic sayings here

and apart from other of course other sayings of other people from different

religions and different traditions and different cultures no doubt about it.

One of the wise sayings which I usually like very much and it is just not one, there's

so many of them, but anyway there's one tradition line which is very short but

it means a lot look at this by Ibn Ata'illah al-Iskandarī

Ibn Ata'illah al-Iskandarī is very well-known scholar and one who has some kind of

tendencies of Sufi tendency but it was not exactly as extreme if you like

in the area of Sufism. Anyway what he is saying "if you desire a glory that

never vanishes" i.e. if you desire a glory that never vanishes then seek not to

embrace a glory that vanishes" of course the the the meaning is is as

clear as anything if one really wants to have something everlasting as a glory as

something which is will benefit him from spiritual point of view make him a

better person and he wants to have that forever i.e.

never vanishes then this person shouldn't just grab anything which he

feels that is important that it's going to make him famous or make him could be

because of greed could be of cause of this who they are or the other so it

means that if you though i.e. you if you desire a glory that never

vanishes then seek not to embrace a glory that vanishes this is just one

there's another I don't know how many well there's about a thousand and two

hundred pages in the in this book full of a lot of beautiful sayings so that is

that that's one thing. Now there is another some Arabic proverbs which is

also very nice to look at and it's also as you can see it's to do

also with different books now now what that says, this a very very short wise saying

which says the meaning of it the best generosity is that which is quick

i.e. if you want to be generous, if you want to be kind to people, if you want to

do good to others don't delay this for years and years do it as soon as you can

because most to people who are really in need of that generosity they need it now

they don't need it after shall we say 10 years when they might have died or they

might be not in need of any of your generosity this might be good idea - so

the best generosity is to be done quickly and now this is just one of this that

tells you how the society understands the importance of action if you want to

do good actions why do we do you delay it do the good action now as as

much of course you don't do actions were it harms you or harms others but if it

is good the action it's always better to do it now. We came back last time when we

spoke about how the coffee became a very important element of social interaction

between people, societies, nations and different human races around the world

come International beloved and become also big business around the world no doubt about it.

The other thing which is I can notice

when it comes to the this type of coffee this while it is provides opportunities

for people to speak to each other to laugh with each other

and to meet each other and to have stories and to share ideas and thoughts

but not in itself as addictive as other things so the coffee in one way has that

kind of small amount of addiction where it is more habitual addiction than

real chemical addiction. We have spoken about a few items one of them is the diary

some of the ideas in the diary some of them are wise sayings in Arabic or

international shall we say wise sayings around the world or some of the books

references. Hopefully this will give the viewers ladies and gentlemen and young

people around the world some kind of insight to the artwork which I was doing

for those 50 and hopefully I'm still doing and

hopefully that we also will be able to produce beautiful artworks going to be

exhibited around the world and to be shown around the world also and in that

respect we hope that this interaction of cultures which is I am

producing in my artwork when it comes to talking about important issues, human

issues in different ways and means from environmental issues from the human

rights from even shall we say different types of rights when we're speaking about

human rights we're talking about the children rights, we are talking about

women's rights, men's rights we're talking about all that important things

of course as we mentioned some time ago and some of these episodes that a lot of

these issues has been written about in poetry and we still read this poetry

between us now a thousand years 1500 years 2,000 years

ago some of it after Islam some of it before Islam.

Therefore you can see that these issues are very important human issues and you

could see also that those people on those times in Islamic civilization or

Arabic shall we say societies in the old days they consider this important and

they speak about it and the right beautiful poetry also about it i.e.

beautiful words beautiful text which people can remember and can enjoy when

they read and when they remember it and thank you
