Witnesses said that they saw a male wearing all black clothing and a black bandana flee from the scene, police stated.

Texas law prevents children under the age of 14 from being tried as adults for first-degree felonies. If convicted as a juvenile, he could face up to 40 years in prison.

The Uvalde school district said the juvenile was a student there.

VanMeter's girlfriend shared that the couple knew the preteen, adding that they had let him stay with them two months ago for about a week.

'He kept getting my son in trouble so I told him he wasn't allowed in our home anymore,' she said. 'I don't know why he did this now.'

She added that the boy probably figured that the family was an easy target as they were hardly ever home.

'He was a troubled boy. ... Everyone warned us but we just followed our hearts,' said Chapa.

The woman said of her boyfriend, a father to a three-year-old girl and four-year-old boy, was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.

'Everyone here knows John and knows the good heart he had,' Chapa said. 'He was just perfect.'

VanMeter's trainer, David Hernandez, who runs Tree City Boxing Club in Uvalde, described VanMeter as a man with a 'heart of gold and an amazing spirit.'

The boxer was known as 'The California Kid' and had been boxing since he was two years old.

VanMeter had won his last boxing match that was scheduled on November 30. His next match was scheduled for February 23 in Beaumont.

ATHENS, Texas AP — An East Texas school district says one student has been killed and two other individuals were injured after a school bus was hit by a train.

The Tyler Morning Telegraph reports the collision took place around 4 p.m. Friday when the bus was in a train crossing in Athens, located about 70 miles southeast of Dallas.

In a statement, the Athens school district says an unidentified male middle school student was killed. An unidentified female elementary school student was injured and flown to a Dallas hospital. Her condition was not immediately known.

The school district says no other students were on the bus.

The bus driver was also injured and taken to a hospital.

A cause of the collision was not immediately known.
