Varus is an ad carry that has engage tool on his ultimate.
There isn't a lot of ad carries that have engage tools: Varus, Ashe, Jhin.
Well, Jhin's W isn't really an engage tool, it is more like a follow up
for a situations when your team caught someone.
Basically if you want an ad carry that can start a fight by himself
here is Varus for you.
Varus has a strong lane phase, so if you need
an ad carry that can dominate early game
you've got a choice between Caitlyn and Varus.
He has a pretty good damage, so he can eventually turn into a hyper carry.
Of course he has lower hyper carry potential compared
to Kog'Maw or Twitch, but with new runes, in particular Lethal Tempo
and Guinsoo Rageblade he's got a lot of damage.
So, if your team needs an ad carry with strong lane phase and
initiation tools Varus is an ideal choice for you.
Difference in playing Varus in proplay and soloq.
Biggest difference is that in soloq you can use ultimate way more often than in proplay.
Because in soloq everyone plays in a way more arcade style, so you can use ultimate to get free kills.
In 5v5 you usually keep ultimate for concrete teamfight.
For example, if dragon spawns in one minute, it is better not to use your ultimate to get a kill and keep it for the drake fight instead.
There isn't any more real differences in soloq and 5v5, because champion serves the same functions:
he tries to win lane phase and uses his ultimate as an engage or disengage tool for the rest of the game.
What is the right way to play this champion in soloq?
Again, your main goal is to win lane, because Varus can win a lot of lanes
or at least he doesn't lose to a lot of lanes.
Skill order. If Varus has an allin support, like Alistar or Blitzcrank, then its better to skill Q until level 5 and from level 7 start to max W.
So, basically you level up Q three times, then max W, then you end maxing Q and then E.
This skill order is good, because Varus builds Guinsoo and you usually buy it around level seven, eight.
Also when you have stacked Guinsoo you apply W twice, so damage with W max will be bigger than with Q or E max.
Also there is no reason to max W straight away, because you need instant damage for trades and allins.
(Take a notice that this guide was made during time when Varus was building Guinsoo first, nowadays you usually build BotrK first.)
(With BotrK first it is better to max Q or E first and only then W. Your goal is to have W maxed around the time when you buy Guinsoo Rageblade.)
(Varus might come back to Guinsoo first, after 9.23 patch when Bloodline and Overheal will be buffed.)
If you have utility support like Sona, Lulu, Janna, so you trade with opponents rather than allin them,
then Varus level ups his E three times and then goes into W max. Q won't give you much in such lane
and E will be good, because you will constantly trade autos and then use E.
Again don't forget about BotrK thing I told you earlier.
So if your support plays allin champion like Leona, Blitcrank, Alistar you max Q, because
your support will use their crowd control onto opponents giving you time to auto attack and burst with Q.
If we will compare ability damages we will find that Q deals more damage in allin situations.
On the other hand if you have "classic" support that pokes opponents and buffs you then E is better,
because E has lower cooldown, gives slow and cuts healing. It will be easier to lane with E max.
In soloq it is important not to die in lane,
because if Varus dies early and gets behind it is very hard for him to comeback.
This is a champion that needs to have tempo advantage,
so if you will get behind there won't be many chances to get back into a game.
Varus isn't Twitch or Kog'Maw that will kill everyone no matter what when they will get their items.
Varus is more of a Caitlyn type of champion. His late game damage with Lethal Tempo is ok, but
if you will buy Guinsoo when opponents will already have three items it won't make much difference.
Itemization. (Keep in mind that this guide was made when Varus used to build Guinsoo Rageblade first item.)
(Nowadays he builds it second after BotrK. He might come back to Guinsoo first again with Bloodline buffs at 9.2.)
Optimal itemization is Guinsoo Rageblade first and then you need to choose items accordingly to the situation.
If there is a lot of AD damage against you, which happens a lot nowadays,
then you need to buy Ninja Tabi and either BotrK or Runaan's Hurricane.
If there are a lot of tanks against you: buy BotrK and only then Hurricane, if not - either way around.
If there are a lot of AP champions you should buy Wit's End after Guinsoo
and only then decide what you need first BotrK or Hurricane.
Your sixth item also can vary. If you need Armor Penetraton you should buy Last Whisper.
If Wit's End isn't enough in terms of magic resist then buy QSS, because Maw won't be that needed and QSS helps you with crowd control.
If you don't need all of this items and you just want to have damage - buy Infinty Edge.
This item will give you tons of damage.
Overall your sixth item is one of these: QSS, Last Whisper, Infinity.
In theory you will always have Hurricane, so with Infnity Edge you will have 60% crit damage
and since you will be always capped in terms of attack speed you will have a lot of auto attacks that did critical damage.
Laning phase. Varus has no real bad matchups,
but you should be a little bit scared of Xayah with Rakan,
because this combo is strong in any situations.
There are two good answers to this though.
First one is Varus with Alistar, because they have a kill potential. Also Alistar can heal a little bit and
he can disengage together with Varus very well.
Second answer to Xayah with Rakan is Morgana. Varus with Morgana lanes well for the same reasons as Alistar.
Other than that there isn't any really hard matchups.
Thresh with Kalista can be a bit tough though, but if you play with Alistar that understands how to play this matchup there won't any real problems.
To counter Thresh with Kalista you just need to focus Kalista all the time, then there won't be any problems.
All other lanes can be played pretty easy, because Varus is one those champions that are strong during lane phase.
What if there is a Thresh against you?
Well, honestly it is pretty hard to land hook as Thresh.
As a result last half of a year Thresh is trying to start a fight with Flay and only then follow up it with Hook.
So if Thresh is coming closer in order to use his E on you, just use your E on him.
This slows him and you, with your support, can start damaging him.
(I think here VincentVega was mostly talking about laning as Varus with ranged support).
Gameplay against Blitzcrank is a little bit different, because he Hooks from a big range, he doesn't come into a melee range like Thresh.
Your counterplay is stock standart against such champions. You should stand behind minions and try to avoid random Hooks.
What to do against Leona? It depends on what support is laning with you.
If you lane with Morgana, you can just walk towards Leona and attack her if she's standing in your auto attack range,
because if she will try to go on you, Morgana will use her shield on you and there won't be any problems.
If you lane with some kind of utility support that is not Morgana, like Sona or Nami,
then lane becomes a bit more tricky,
because Leona can just engage on you no matter what.
As a result it is hard to do something without your jungler, so you need to call him.
After 1-2 ganks there won't any big problems, because of the Leona's playstyle.
If she engaged on you, she doesn't have any way to retreat. If your jungler was during her engage
you just get a free kill.
Also against Leona it is useful to push lane hard early to get level two first.
This also works well against Thresh or Blitzcrank, because they are melee,
so their lane pushing ability is weak. It is not hard to outpush them.
If you got level two earlier than them, then you can just zone them from creeps.
Starting items. If you're against melee support usually you take Doran's Balde.
Excluding only lanes against Kalista and Twitch, against them you should take Doran's Shield.
This is the only two ad carries against which you should take Doran's Shield no matter what.
If you're against ranged supports like Karma, Lulu, Nami, which will harras you all the time, you should take Doran's Shield too.
In all other matchups, I mean against melee supports, just take Doran's Blade.
Doran's Shield also can be used against Caitlyn, because Caitlyn will be very agressive.
She's got a huge range, so she will constantly auto you, which will make Doran's Shield useful.
If you're against, for example, Jhin, Vayne, Sivir, Tristana, Zyra - take Doran's Blade.
Ah, by the way, lately people started to use Miss Fortune a lot, take Doran's Shield against her also.
New combo arrived: Jhin with MF support, both taking Comets and constantly poking you. Damage is insane.
Miss Fortune uses her E on you, Jhin instantly follows up this with his W (it is easier to land due to slow from MF's E) so you get rooted.
All of this forces to you to stand a whole duration of Miss Fortune's E, while taking two Comets in a face. This hurts a lot.
Power spikes. So, when Varus gets his power spikes? Well, when you buy Guinsoo Rageblade you get first mini power spike.
When you buy second item, especially if it's Wit's End, you are a pretty strong Varus.
From this moment you will become only stronger, but basically you're stronger than any ad carry on the two items.
For example, you have Guinsoo/Wit's End or Guinsoo/BotrK and there is a Tristana against you with Infinity, Statikk
(nowadays it is Stormrazor/Rapidfire, but after 9.3 patch probably will be Infinity/Rapidfire).
If you are the first to start a fight, for example, you use your ultimate on her and start attacking her - you will win 100%.
Especially if this is happening in a lane and you killed a minion before the fight to get bonus attack speed
and your Guinsoo Rageblade is already stacked up.
With this conditions met you just can't lose to any ad carry on a 2 items fight.
As a result you should focus on a getting Guinsoo as soon as possible, because with it you're getting a good power spike.
How to teamfight and where should you keep your attention during it? Well, it depends on a how teamfight got started.
If it is...
In soloq teamfight is starting in a two ways usually. First, it is you who's starting it with your ultimate.
You use your ultimate and your whole team is trying to burst down the target you ulted.
Usually such kind of teamfights are easy to win.
Second situation is when your team got engaged on.
You should just use ultimate as a disengage and start focusing a guy that you ulted.
Basically you just auto attack the closest target to you. For example, you got a tank in front of you and there is an ad carry behind him or midlaner.
It is not a good decision to try and get to the carries, just auto attack the tank. Varus is great against tanks with this auto attack speed build, because
he has hybrid damage and percent health damage. Since Varus has both magic and physical damage tanks are dying very fast.
Well-timed ability usage and ability combos. You should try to optimize your W as well as you can.
This means that you should use abilities only when you got three W stacks on someone.
For example, after you used your ult you can use your E right away,
but it is better to use your Q only after you did three auto attacks.
Because your ultimate has longer range than auto attack, often your combo looks like this: ultimate - E - three auto attacks - Q.
You can make 3 auto attacks before using your ultimate if you are able to do so. For example, if you are fighting during laning phase.
All in all your biggest damage combo is: 3 auto attacks - R - E - 3 auto attacks - W - Q.
Now, let's talk about ability usage during laning phase. This part is especially useful when you max E first.
You should trade in a very special way: your trade is 1-2 auto attacks followed by E, 1-2 auto attacks followed by E.
Key here is that you shouldn't make this trades long. Tricky part about Varus'es trades is that after he does his 1-2 auto - E all his damage is gone.
Often lower players get caught in a wrong mindset. After they do 1-2 auto - E combo, they see that they did a good damage and
this triggers them to go into all in fight, while in fact you already spent your damage and should back off.
Usually such trading patterns end up leading to you getting more damage from the opponent than you did to him.
Exception will be situations when you lane with Blitcrank, Leona or something like this, then yes - you can all in.
Also you should know that you can use R-Flash instead of Flash-R. R-Flash is way faster than Flash-R.
Some people are using Flash-R, even at Worlds, for example, Bang used Flash-R for some reasons.
Always keep in mind that Flash-R works.
Runes. (Keep in mind that this guide was made at the start of season 8, so runes on the screen are a bit off.
Overall everything is still the same, but I suggest you to check sites like probuilds.net and see what pros are using right now.)
In terms of runes you have two choices. Well in fact you got only one choice, but let's go over both viable ways.
Precision is your main tree. I prefer to use Lethal Tempo in like 99.9% of my games, because it has a lot of benefits.
What was the main problem of Varus with Guinsoo? First, it took a long time to get it stacked.
Second, often you were overcapped in terms of attack speed with this build, especially when your passive kicked in.
Lethal Tempo fixes both of those problems, because it lets you to stack Guinsoo very fast and also removes
attack speed cap, so you can auto attack with like 3-3.5 attack speed. So, I think Lethal Tempo gives way more
benefits than Press the Attack. Yes, PtA gives your some burst damage and amplifies your team's damage, but I think Lethal Tempo bonuses are way better.
I prefer using Triumph, because Overheal isn;'t as good, because usually you have only BotrK as your lifesteal item, sometimes QSS.
I find Triumph way more interesting, especially in the current meta, because it can save you a lot.
For example, imagine Zed is engaging onto you and you kill him right before his Mark explodes, so you get health back and survive.
I took attack speed before, but nowadays I prefer using Bloodline, because there are some games where you take BotrK only as your third item.
You are buying your Guinsoo, opponents have a lot of mages, so you are buing Wit's End second, so you're forced to buy BotrK as your third item, if not even fourth.
You have a lot of attack speed anyway, because all of your items give you attack speed, while lifesteal is a hard stat to get.
So this mastery with 12% lifesteal helps a lot. You take Doran's Blade with 3% lifesteal,
this mastery with 12% lifesteal and you get 15% lifesteal which is a pretty nice amount.
You've got two choices as your last rune in this tree. It is either Coup de Grace or Cut Down.
Everyone has own opinion on this choice. If you are against at least two tanks, for example,
there is an Alistar/Tahm Kench/Braum against you in the botlane and ChoGath at toplane, then Cut Down is a better choice.
If you are against squishy setup, then it's better to use Coup de Grace.
You've got two choices as your second tree. I don't like Domination on Varus at all, I think it doesn't give you anything.
You can take Sorcery as your second tree. (Again, keep in mind that this guide was made some time ago.)
(Right now viable choices for Sorcery are: Manaflow Band for more harras, Absolute Focus, Gathering Storm for better scaling or Scorch for more damage in lane.)
(If you liked using Absolute Hat back in a days, you can use Domination as your second tree with Ultimate Hunter.)
(Cool combo that significantly lowers your ultimate cooldown is Presence of Mind with Ultimate Hunter.)
(Also you can use Taste of Blood for more sustain during laning phase, Cheap Shot for more damage on your E/R and BotrK active, or Eyeball Collection for more AD.)
(Additional wards are also fine.)
Another viable choice as your second tree is Resolve.
(Here you can use Demolish for easier tower plating taking, Second Wind combined with Doran's Shield is good for sustaining though poke,)
(Bone Plating is a great defensive rune in any situation, Overgrowth might be viable.)
(Revitalize has a nice synergy with new buffed Overheal and BotrK healing.)
Inspiration isn't very good for attack speed Varus.
Free boots aren't as good as you think, because they delay your boots for a significant amount of time.
AD carries rely on their boots a lot in terms of stats that they aquire though it.
For example, Berserker's Greaves attack speed is basically at Runaan's Hurricane level and sometimes you need early Ninja Tabis.
Resume. Varus is a pretty straight forward champion.
You need to focus on using your poke potential though 1-2 autos-E during laning phase.
You shouldn't be scared of taking duels after you get Guinsoo, especially against other ad carries, especially if you bought Ninja Tabi's.
It is unlikely that you will lose duel to any ad carry, except for, maybe, Vayne, but again if it was you who engaged you shouldn't lose it.
That's all folks! Please, subscribe and like! Cya!
