Where to get free donuts on Friday, National Doughnut Day
Need an excuse to eat a delicious doughnut? Here you go: Friday, June 1, is National Doughnut Day.
The annual observation may appear to be just another half-baked food holiday, but theres actual history behind the observance. During World War I, The Salvation Army would send lassies or doughnut girls, bearing coffee and baked goods, to areas near the front lines in France to boost the morale of the troops.
In 1938, The Salvation Army honored those women by declaring the first Friday of June to be National Doughnut Day.

NATIONAL DOUGHNUT DAY DEALS 2018: WHERE TO GET FREE DOUGHNUTS, DUNKIN DONUTS, KRISPY
KREME The start of June marks the beginning of summer—but
this year, June 1 also marks National Doughnut Day.
It's usually held on the first Friday in June, which happens to also be the first of
the month this year.
National Doughnut Day has been a tradition for 80 years, since the Salvation Army started
a tribute to the "Doughnut Lassies" who served the treats to troops during World War
I. Volunteers set up near the front lines of battle during the war and helped support
the men by bringing them supplies like clothes and also food, which is where the idea for
the doughnut came in.
Baking in a war zone was difficult, but frying dough was just easy enough that they could
manage to get it done and bring it to the men in battle.
Many of the women who helped were then credited with helping to make the doughnut so popular
once they and the troops returned to the United States, according to the Salvation Army.
While the volunteers were only able to fry seven doughnuts at a time, they were still
able to help raise the spirits of some of the soldiers.
Margaret Sheldon and Helen Purviance were the women who innovated the use of helmets
to fry the doughnuts.
