Hi and welcome back to love English today's lesson is all about function.
It's about doing something that most of us do every day but sometimes when
you're speaking in a foreign language the simplest of things that can seem
like the scariest so today's lesson or during a Starbucks in English or during
a coffee in English no matter what coffee shop you are going to ordering a
coffee is an essential thing we all need that coffee buzz first thing in the
morning although maybe some of you are tea drinkers let me know however I know
that many of my students love Starbucks and being able to order a coffee to do
these simple activities in English can really boost your confidence and make
you realize that actually speaking English is not that scary at all
so in today's lesson I'm going to go through the different questions you
might get asked when buying a coffee but also the language you can use when
requesting a coffee and the specifications of that coffee so shall
we get started
all right guys before we get started make sure you have clicked that
subscribe button and you are ready to receive a notifications of our lessons
click the bell so it looks at a like of that and you will be the first to be
notified of our lessons once they are uploaded and of course that we always
respond that to people's comments initially when we upload a lesson gets a
bit more difficult after time but if you want that response if you want us to
correct your English and practice then comment in the boxes below and make sure
you're the first there right the first thing you must remember when ordering a
coffee making any kind of request if you don't say I want in English you might to
be able to say this in your language but in English this is really rude if you
want some helpful tips on language to avoid it to sound more polite in English
then of course you can find my lesson here on a polite English or have a look
in the description box below and I'll add the link for you to watch after this
lesson now the first thing you are going to encounter when you go into a
Starbucks is the question can I help you what can I get you what would you like
these are the kind of questions you are going to be asked by the barista the
coffee shop service person they are going to ask you what you want now in
response there are a few phrases that you could use to sound
first of all polite and to get your coffee
they include could I get could I have I'll have our nice we'll learn four
requests please may I have that's nice and formal I'd like I would like
contract it I'd like or I'd love particularly if
this is a coffee shop you go to regularly and
no the people it's a bit more informal and it's something different a different
way of requesting something so can I get a latte could I get a latte please may I
have a cappuccino I'd love a cappuccino can I get a latte
could I get a latte all of these are perfectly acceptable
and polite ways to request a coffee and of course if you didn't say please may I
have then you would need to add please at the end of those expressions can I
get a locker please could I get a latte please
please is essential even if you've perfected that intonation and you sound
polite these still needs to add the key words of please and thank you whether
you are in a coffee shop now the next thing that they might ask is drink here
drink in or takeaway in this case if they're trying to find out whether
you're gonna have a regular mug or cup or if you need one of these okay a
takeaway cup in this case I'm sure most of you will have the recyclable ones
this one is not this is actually a very bad not environmentally friendly paper
cup once you've established what coffee you're going to have and where you're
going to have it you will probably be asked what size Starbucks do operate
with slightly different a little bit confusing terminology which I've tried
to do some research on so hopefully I'll get it correct you've got short tall
grande net or in some coffee shops they actually have extra-large which would be
Atlanta now these are based on Italian numbers you don't need to worry too much
about them as long as you understand these size conversions in Starbucks
language little bit complicated for my liking I usually just say I'll have a
medium latte now of course that you want to say what kind of coffee you would
like now Starbucks is a coffee shop but they do have tea I'm focusing on coffee
we'll have a look at T another time the kinds of coffee you've got are of course
a latte cappuccino mocha frappuccino white coffee that's white that's with
milk a plain coffee with milk or americano of
course you can also order an espresso espresso not expresso like many of the
English people pronounce incorrectly espresso once you've decided on your
coffee you want to decide perhaps how strong it is there is the option of
having decaffeinated decaffeinated caffeine is of course the thing that
gives you the buzz that gives you the energy not good if it's late in the day
or you're pregnant or you've already had five espressos you'll probably want
decaffeinated so you can request that most coffee shops operate in shops now
not in vodka shots but coffee shots espresso you can decide whether you want
a single a double or a triple bit crazy shot of espresso could I get a triple
shot of espresso can I have just a single shot and again using those
phrases makes you so much more polite and far less demanding now if you have a
sweet tooth meaning you like sugar some of you might choose the slightly
healthier option of adding a sweetener to your coffee or brown sugar much
better than the refined white sugar however Starbucks and most coffee shops
also offer syrups so a sugary liquid that is usually flavored you can have
caramel and vanilla gingerbread Gingerbread they have at Christmas time
which is really yummy in England hazelnut syrup there are loads I've got
no idea how many there are I actually prefer to have my coffee without sugar
the same as I do with tea but you guys might say could you add some hazelnut
syrup of course they'll ask you so if you hear that word syrup you know what
they're talking about they're talking about flavoring your coffee with a
sugary liquidy substance that is little bit naughty now
more complicated than the language you need to use and how polite you need to
be in English is the milk that is available nowadays so many people prefer
not to have regular cow's milk now if you are a normal dairy drinker then at
your choose from full fat so whole milk skimmed milk or semi skimmed skimmed it
is with kind of very minimal fat semi skimmed is half the fat more or less so
those are your three options I usually go for semi skimmed and I think that's
the preferred one for latte or is it skimmed I don't know maybe you can tell
me so those are the kinds of milk you would have that are kind of standard
milk however you've also got coconut milk which I quite like although not in
coffee soya milk which is a good alternative almond milk and as well
oat milk which I actually haven't tried I can't think if there are any other
kinds of milk but they will certainly give you the option which could get a
little bit confusing so make sure that if they don't ask you do request to have
milk and you can also say make it milky meaning extra milk or you could say a
splash of milk meaning you just want a little you want it quite a dark coffee
obviously cappuccinos and lattes are very milky so you're not gonna be able
to change your requests there you're just going to need to specify which milk
you like as if this wasn't complicated enough you could also request extra foam
on your cappuccino you could ask them to make you a latte extra frothy so this is
the bubbles the machine that they put the milk in and they make hot and steamy
and bubbly and you can specify how you would like this some people like it
extra frothy or extra foamy you could even ask now I know that on a latte you
don't traditionally add cocoa powder but I'm a bit naughty and often do so I
would request could you add a little cocoa powder on top just to give it a
chocolatey kick so this is something you might ask for and they will usually
check if you want this on your cappuccino and make a pretty pattern I
think in addition I've noticed that you can also get some other kinds of
sprinkles so obviously you've got the powder of the cocoa you've also got
nutmeg powder and there was another one that was like a caramel sugary sprinkle
thing I don't know I tried that the other day on my latte it was quite nice
so you can ask for a sprinkling of a sprinkling of cocoa powder a sprinkling
of nutmeg powder a sprinkling of whatever that sugary thing was I had the
other day so if you've got this far you'll of course say thanks thank you
Cheers thanks so much you could even say tar if you know the people and you want
to be a bit more informal or if you're up north but make sure that you do say
thank you it is essential they may even say to you have a good day in which case
you can respond you too so now that we have gone through the language let's
have a look at me in action using this a language to order a coffee hopefully
when you see it done it for a real ban it might seem a little less intimidating.
