five different coffee experiences
that are very unique to LA
From the cheapest
to the most expensive
to the most exotic
to the most secretive one

the most unique coffee experience in LA
I have a strange relationship with coffee
because I don't like the flavor
but I like the effect
The best coffee I have tried
is the coffee that my grandma used to make
in Venezuela
So it's going to be really difficult to find
a coffee as good as that
The very first place that we're going to
is called Alfred
They have this slogan
'"But first, coffee'
It's very instagramable
They seem to market the place
as a very photo-friendly one
The very first thing that we were told
when they saw the cameras
is that we cannot film
Welcome to LA!
We're being kicked out guys
- What, we can't shoot?
I did not like the way they treated me
They treat you as if they are doing you a favor!
And, no! I came to buy your super expensive coffee!
It's a little snobby
It's coffee!
Coffee is supposed to bring people together
and make you start your day better
The coffee shop is just right behind us
We're on the street trying the $10 coffee
This is the #10DOLLARLATTE
It's called like that
and it costs ten Dollars and it's a Latte
Mmmm, it's not bad
The 10 Dollar coffee
I love it!
because it had four shots of espresso
and I love almond milk
So, nice!
But, 10 Dollars? Comon!
Does it taste like 10 Dollars?
No
I mean, it's good but not 10 Dollars good
It doesn't have anything that is out of this world
I do recommend the small coffee
It is delicious
It's like an ice cream cone dipped in chocolate
It has coconut milk and coffee
Whoa...
Wow, this is really strong
- It was really different to any daily coffee you would have
It is worth to try it
Even though they mistreat you
Also not out of this world
It was OK, we tried it
Now, we're going to try the cold brew
And it's amazing because it matches my clothes!
Anyways!
Let's see what this is all about
I really like the branding
It tastes like water!
I don't know, you try it
This is like a coffee took a shower
and this is the water from that shower!
It's too diluted
This is not a coffee
It's not even as good as my daily coffee!

Man, what an old place
Definitely walking into a different dimension
Philippe The Original is a landmark in LA
Known for the best French dip
But they also have coffee
How much does this coffee cost?
50 Cents
And how long has it been costing the same?
Around five years ago
Five years ago --
Before, it was 10 Cents
- 10 Cents?
Yes!
- For how long?
For more than one hundred years
The line was long!
People go there and spend some time
to get some cheap and good food
I didn't like that the lines were long
But despite that, people waited
This place is one hundred and ten years old
That's why it's so popular
Mmmmm...
I love the coffee!
First, the price is amazing!
This is better than...
than the 10 Dollar coffee at Alfred's
Girl, this tastes better than any other...
than any other coffee that I've tasted
that cost more than $5
It doesn't taste as though it's worth a few cents
No!
This is the real deal, authentic coffee
Cheap and it will not break your bank account
It tastes like coffee that's made at home
Like your grandma's coffee
It was not pretentious at all
You go there, you pay your 50 Cents
You get your coffee
Boom! You start your day right!
That's how I like to have coffee
I left the place feeling good
And they treat you wonderfully
The whole place is swimming in nostalgia
They have a lot of memories on their walls
They even have these old school phone booths
You can go there and put some coins
and call someone while you're having coffee
f you really want to get a feel
of old Downtown LA
This is the right place

- So we're here at the Cat Cafe experience
Look at that beautiful cat!
I really hope you like cats
Because we're going to have a lot of them with us
It was very interesting to me that they mix
coffee with cats
Why?
This is something that could only exist in Los Angeles
It's food and hair
Food and animals
Why would you do that?
Let's hope that there is no cat hair in the coffee

The coffee here is a second element
This place is more:

Play with cats
And if you want one
adopt them because they don't have a home
We work with
a rescue partner, Stray Cat Alliance
We help cats get new homes essentially
Stray Cats Alliance pulls them from the streets
other shelters
Kill shelters, mainly
Amazing, because they have all the paperwork
and it's all formal
It's so LA in the sense that
it's eccentric with a good cause
We allow up to 17 guests
per 70 minutes
to come in, interact with the cats
We found out that
the coffee is actually made in another place
because you cannot cook where animals are
We partner with Open Space Cafe
on Fairfax, down the street
where we pick up the coffee and cookies and all that
We met all the cats that were around
There were so many different personalities
and people were loving them!

We were so distracted with the cats
We forgot that we were here for the coffee
They gave us this and we were like
Oh, thanks!

I think people completely forgot their coffees
They were super happy with the cats
I didn't like that I got a lot of hair in my clothes
But, sometimes you need to get dirty to have a unique experience

This Indonesian cat eats the coffee bean

And then, we drink it
This is one of the most expensive coffees
in the world
The cup of Kopi Luwak is $120
You're shitting me
So literally speaking,
Vanessa invited me to consume poop
I always questioned why I would drink
a coffee coming out of an animal's poop
But I always wanted to know
what that experience would be like
And it's something that I wasn't expecting to find
in Santa Monica
This is the only place in LA that I could find
that actually serves this coffee
I booked an appointment
Because yes, you need to book an appointment
It's like a whole service
The owner guides you through the whole process
of making the Kopi Luwak
I honestly don't know what to expect
And if any coffee is unique
This is it guys
This is the top of what it gets for coffee
This is the finest it gets

This is before processing and this is after processing
Ahhhh OK
Can I smell it?
This man seemed super cultured
He explained every step
He looked like a scientist with all his lab tools
It's like a science project people
You need to achieve a right temperature
to make the coffee the right way
I was very excited
I was like oh my God I'm getting closer
to drinking poop!
Now, when you're ready we're going to take one spoon
Oh my God!
and we're going to aerate it twice
- JC I don't think I'm ready!
I don't know if it was the placebo effect
But, that cofee
the texture of it
When you take a sip
You feel like the whole coffee enters
and embraces your tongue
This is definitely a very, very unique flavor
I like it a lot
I mean, I would have it every morning
We had to drink the coffee by stages
So we can experience
the different flavors
that this coffee can offer
Right now it's a really bold
A little angry
Robust
The colder it got
the more caramelized it tasted
I do think it's something worth trying
It's got to be special considering that it has
such a specific characteristic as this

Besides trying the Kopi Luwak
One of the reasons why I chose this place
is to show you how diverse this city is

When I started researching about this place
I couldn't really find any details
They have no menu
The phone, nobody answers
I sent emails that I really wanted to go there
try the experience and film
I never got a reply
Vanessa had such high expectations about this place
We need to go to this place, let's go, let's go!
When we arrived there
We saw rolling doors and the street looked weird
And I thought, no...
I think we're in the wrong place
and we had to double-check
Giorgi Porgi is located
at a very industrial area
in Downtown
You wouldn't expect to find a coffee shop there
There are no signs
There are no logos

until a guy opened this rolling door

We ask him hey do you know
where this coffee shop is?
And he was like
Yeah this is actually the coffee shop
And we were like...
It's closed today
I had to show him
It said that it actually was open
And that I had tried to call him the past two weeks
And that I sent emails
And that I really really wanted to try this coffee for this video
Everybody needs a day off
It's the Lord's day
- Yeah I know but...
- It's Sunday come on
I really tried to convince the guy
And finally, he said yes
You can come in, but you cannot bring the cameras
I could make you the coffee but no cameras
- What?
Not even the end result?
Oh come on the end result is the point

We're here for coffee
And we won't show anything

And this is the moment
where everybody was telling me
OK let's go
I guess we're not going to have this experience
I mean the point is the camera!
Besides, why should we turn it off?
Are they going to kidnap us or what?

I know Vanessa didn't feel safe
But I still pushed for it
Because I thought that this would really be a unique experience
Vanessa kept insisting 'believe me this is something special'
and I thought
No! I want to leave
I don't want to enter this shop
that seems random and lost in the middle of LA
in a lonely street with homeless people, no
I was very worried
It's OK if we don't have the cameras
Let's at least try this coffee
Then, with all this mystery
He made sure that the cameras were off
We entered...
The place is very small
very cozy
Super earthy looking
They have a schedule on the wall
and all the days were 'CLOSED'
I don't know, these people don't follow a schedule
They don't have a menu
They just ask you what do you like?
Hot or cold?
Dairy or no dairy?
And then they will just customize the coffee for you
He starts creating or inventing the drink
Without explaining to you what he's doing
But what are you doing?
He'll say 'you'll see'
I want to know what I'm going to drink!
'No, you'll see'
I really wish that I could show you
The type of coffee that these people are making
It was a different drink for each one of us
In different cups with different designs
And the way that they served it was
in these very unique and original ceramics
Made by a local artist
They were beautiful!
and delicious!
Everything looked exotic
And all the cups had a design
My coffee came as a shot
And he grated some coffee beans on top
Mine was a little spicy
I've never tried anything like this
It was delicious!
They don't seem to like this mass production of coffee
Press of a button and you get the same coffee for everybody
It's a whole concept and they don't do it for money
They're very genuine
and they enjoy having people with good vibes
and it's one of the weirdest things I've encountered
And then...
At the end,
They didn't charge us!
They opened the place for us
They made us unique coffee
And they didn't charge us!
#blessed
So I cannot tell you what was the price
Most unique coffee experience in LA in 2018
My favorite coffee experience in Los Angeles
was at Giorgi Porgi
I felt special because they made me a drink just for me
how I like it
And when I tried it, I thought WOW
If I have to pick a favorite
I'll choose Giorgi Porgi
Because this was the most memorable experience
that I've had so far with coffee
He really managed to find a flavor that I would like
We had a conversation
We forgot about our phones
We forgot about our cameras
Even if we didn't get the chance to film it,
that doesn't mean that we shouldn't have the experience
I'm very happy that Vanessa insisted that we stay
Because it was really worth it
For me this was a really unique experience
from the beginning!
