Where to get free donuts on Friday, National Doughnut Day
Need an excuse to eat a delicious doughnut? Here you go: Friday, June 1, is National Doughnut Day.
The annual observation may appear to be just another half-baked food holiday, but theres actual history behind the observance. During World War I, The Salvation Army would send lassies or doughnut girls, bearing coffee and baked goods, to areas near the front lines in France to boost the morale of the troops.
In 1938, The Salvation Army honored those women by declaring the first Friday of June to be National Doughnut Day.
Several Rochester-area establishments are marking the day with deals, freebies and specials.
Misfit Doughnuts and Treats.

A vegan bakery, Misfit Doughnuts and Treats will offer a free Misfit Mini glazed doughnut with any purchase.
The pop culture-inspired shop will also premiere two new flavors. On Friday, it will serve its cookies and donuts from 8 a.m.
until 8:30 p.m. . Boxcar.
127 Railroad St.
Boxcar, near the Rochester Public Market, will serve a free doughnut with any cold brew.
It also will be doing giveaways for free dozens on Facebook and Instagram. It will be open 8 a.m.
to 10 p.m. Friday. .

Schutts Apple Mill.
1063 Plank Road in Penfield.
A fixture for generations, Schutts Apple Mill will offer a free friedcake to all of its visitors on Friday.
It will be open 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
From the driveway, you may notice that Schutt's is in the midst of an expansion.
Its cider production will move into the new facility, and 25-foot windows will offer families a chance to watch the action. .
Ridge Donut Café. 1600 Portland Ave.
An Irondequoit fixture for the past 39 years, Ridge Donuts serves more than 30 varieties of doughnuts.
On Friday, get a free classic friedcake — there are several to choose from — with any purchase.
It will be open 5 a.m. to 8 p.m.
Donuts Delite.
1700 Culver Road, Irondequoit.
Donuts Delite will offer a free mini cannoli delite doughnut with any purchase, while supplies last.
Monroe County Executive Cheryl Dinolfo and representatives from The Salvation Army will be on hand from 7:30 to 8 a.m.
It is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.
but you are advised to arrive early to get the doughnut deal.
Dunkin' Donuts.
Get a free classic doughnut of your choice with the purchase of any beverage.
Its classic doughnuts will be given new names and designs for the occasion.
The Vanilla Frosted Donut, for example, will be called "Party On," complete with confetti sprinkles and a blue icing drizzle. .
Wegmans .
Wegmans will offer special flavors for National Doughnut Day 2017.
