EU negotiators in Brussels in talks to get Theresa May's Brexit deal over the line - Duration: 2:54.

EU negotiators have spent the past week locked behind closed doors in Brussels trying to thrash out a way to get Mrs May's deal 'over the line' – without compromising their dogged insistence on a Northern Ireland 'backstop'

The Mail on Sunday understands that they have received detailed legal advice about the expected request from London to extend Article 50 beyond the planned Brexit Day on March 29 – including work on whether it is possible to circumvent the need for the UK to put MEPs up for election to the new European Parliament when it is formed on July 1

A Brussels source said: 'We want to help Mrs May but we need a stronger indication from your MPs about where we go from here and what they want

'The extension is being discussed behind closed doors, but not because of any formal request by the British – yet

Once you try to go beyond the start of July it becomes very messy.'Legal work is being done on that, but there is quite a bit of opposition here to an extension

We would prefer a clearer position from the UK Parliament.' It comes as tensions mounted within the EU27 over whether to water down the 'backstop' which while designed to avoid a hard border in Northern Ireland, has become the most likely cause of one if talks collapse

There was considerable anger and confusion after the EU Commission warned a No Deal Brexit would lead to a hard border in Ireland, only to be contradicted by Dublin

Irish leader Leo Varadkar was then forced to row back on unexpected claims that a No Deal would see a return to troops on the border

In a furious blast, his confidence and supply partner Michael Martin hit out yesterday: 'When the Taoiseach tells an audience in Davos that the Army may have to be sent to the border, he is contradicting everything that we have been told about preparations

It is hard to see how this helps our case.'

Arsenal legend tells Emery to get rid of SIX defenders - Duration: 3:33.

It's no real secret that Arsenal look to be short of a few good defenders.   But Charlie Nicholas has laid into the Gunners defence - by urging Unai Emery to get rid of no fewer than SIX of his back line

Arsenal were knocked out of the FA Cup after a 3-1 home defeat to Manchester United on Friday

During the match their defensive injury crisis worsened, as Sokratis and Laurent Koscielny were both forced off with injury

However former Arsenal star Nicholas feels many of the current crop are just not good enough

Speaking to Sky Sports via Metro , Nicholas said: "I don't know what we expect from Arsenal

"You talk about tactics and yeah he can set up more defensively, I get that, and he can be a bit more shrewd

"But this defence, and I mean all the defence, is a shambles.   "He's tried a back five, he's tried a back four last week that beats Chelsea , he tries another back four last night – it's a shambles again

"It's a mess, the whole defensive setup is an absolute joke.  "From right back, centre-backs, if it's two, if it's three, if it's a left back

"There's not a defender in the club and it's shameful that this is allowed to go on like this

"  The injuries to Sokratis and Koscielny leave the Gunners desperately short at the back

Hector Bellerin, Konstantinos Mavropanos and Rob Holding are all on the injury list, whilst Callum Chambers is on loan and cannot be recalled

But Nicholas is of the opinion they shouldn't be in the team even when they are fit

He added: "I get where you're coming from on the point that the manager must take his responsibility, but these players are a million miles from being good enough

"He has to get rid of them all defensively.  "You're probably lucky if you've got eight defenders, you keep two

If you're lucky."  Of Arsenal's first-team squad, they now have only five defenders to pick from

Ashley Maitland-Niles, Shkrodran Mustafi, Sead Kolasinac, Nacho Monreal and Stephan Lichtsteiner are all available to choose from, whilst Granit Xhaka has been deployed there this season

This is all the more concerning for the Gunners when you consider they face three of the other top six clubs before March, as well as the return of the Europa League

Whether Emery decides to dip into the transfer market before Thursday's deadline for a defender remains to be seen
