We compete with companies from all over the world so for us, being able to be
competitive is just vitally important. If we're not competitive we're not going to
sustain the brand. This system provided an opportunity for us to identify very
specific savings - a raft of them, that would otherwise be quite difficult to
get. Prior to Team Assurance we had multiple databases. We were using Excel
spreadsheets, Word documents, we have a quality management system - there's all
these different systems that we're now combining into one software package. It's
around safety, quality, productivity, employee engagement, morale - it captures
all those into one smart program.
Because we're using Team Assurance its freed up a lot of time for me to
do improvement projects and work on higher-level issues mainly because of
not writing emails anymore, people are actually running their own improvement
ideas and doing their own sort of admin side of it, so it's freed up a lot of
time for us.
I think with the staff when they see the actions or improvements they've raised and
have actually been completed and implemented, it gives them more drive to
keep coming up with more improvements and improving things along the lines. They
find it easy because the system so easy to use. They can see that if there is a
problem, it's good to bring it up to try and get it fixed - this will be there to
help them; not just myself, but to help all of us to get things done, to make
things easier, to make things flow more smoothly and to get the job done better.
Some of our goals have a cost-benefit target. We can clearly see how we're
tracking towards that target and I guess that's really important. It's important
for the factory to because they don't normally have that visual aspect of a
goal so if they can see where we started, where we need to get to and how we're
tracking towards that goal, that's gold for engagement I think.
It's very difficult in a paper sense to cascade very specific goals very
specific objectives so that they all add up to one meaningful outcome. This system
makes that quite automatic, makes life a lot easier for people to see what
they're achieving and understand what their role is in the bigger picture.
It used to be a certain group of people who would be running improvements throughout
the factory but now, with all the team leaders being trained, they're running
their own little projects within their departments but also, helping them further
down is the staff that work underneath - they've actually been raising
improvements and working through their projects too - so it's actually helping
everybody along the lines. Within a very short period of time we had the entire
factory using the software. For me personally I go home with a smile on my
face because I know we are improving the business and Team Assurance is helping
us do that.
