so you're gonna come visit Austin and you're looking for what to do
this video is for you
Austin is a rapidly changing city
even if you were here a few months ago
you might come back and feel like it's not exactly the same as it used to be
so because of that we're gonna try and make a video that focuses on categories
more than specifics
and what I mean by that is the five main things that make Austin Texas, Austin Texas
those categories are of course food, music, nightlife, outdoor activities, and history
so let's start off with some food
Austin is known for having great food and you can find whatever type of food
you are looking for when you are here and you won't be disappointed
that being said when you are here you must do two things
visit a food truck and eat barbecue
food trucks have become a sensation
throughout the United States and Austin is no exception
out of the estimated 4,000 food trucks in the United States 1300 of them are
found in Austin
needless to say you can find any type of food you are looking for
in a truck
Barbie Beee QQQ
in Austin people fight over which barbecue joint is best
Although there's many barbecue places to choose from a few standout
we're here at Franklin's barbecue on the east side in Austin one of the most famous barbecue
joints that's currently in operations today
although most establishments are unique
they all pretty much use either pecan or oak wood to smoke their meats
and the most common meats of choice are either gonna be your ribs or your brisket
my personal favorite moist brisket
you can't go wrong with it
If you're planning to come to one of the very
popular barbecue joints here in Austin be prepared to wait a long time before
getting your food
now let's go ask a few people what they think about Franklin's BBQ
So how long have y'all been waiting here for BBQ?
We got here about 7 am
Almost 4 hours
Ok so they open at 12? 11!
So we have about 3 minutes left before they open
what's your ultimate barbecue food?
Brisket Yeah brisket
And have y'all been here before? Yes!
what's a barbecue place Austin? Franlins
when visiting Austin and in a time crunch
you can kill two birds with one stone and check out a barbecue food truck
they're all over Austin but we're here on the east side at Micklethwait food Truck
about to enjoy some amazing brisket
how's it compared to other places?
I say it's on par with other places like La barbecue and Franklin's
now that you have an idea of what to look for food wise let's talk music
All right so Austin's known for music some might say it's even the live music capital of the world
and it's not actually very hard to stumble across music
I personally think music finds you in the city
from the airport to shopping malls to just about
any bar you'll find live music here
Austin's most famously known for ACL live
which is how did the Moody Theater it's a periodic concert series that airs
on PBS
so you're probably familiar with it
there's also Austin City Limits or ACL festival
which happens in October for two different weekends
Austin just is basically known for music and if you come here you'll find it
I would recommend if you're looking for a show when you come into town to check out the
Austin Chronicle they have a pretty extensive calendar that lists all the
shows that are going on and you'll definitely find a show to go see while you're in town
most cities have a few drinking districts and Austin is no exception
Austin stands out because they're
downtown supposedly has more bars per capita than anywhere else in the entire country
a study found that there was around one
bar per 67 people in Austin
needless to say you can find a bar and an area that
fits exactly what you are looking for here
although there are many drinking districts in Austin
we are going to just cover the most popular
the Main Street to know is sixth Street. This street runs east to west and has three distinct
districts on it
east of Highway 35 is appropriately called East sixth
This region currently has more of a hipster vibe, is more relaxed, and almost has a neighborhood feel
obviously this is all subject to change within the next two to three years
next is dirty six which is found on the west side of i-35
Dirty 6th is the most famous drinking district in Austin and is what most visitors check out
over the weekend the streets in this district are blocked off and the area
can get pretty packed
to the west of dirty six is West sixth
it's the closest part of Austin to Scottsdale
what I mean by that is this area is trying to be more upscale
the drinks are a little bit more expensive the clientele dresses a little bit nicer
and of course you get a higher density of Bro's here
Lastly, there's Rainey Street
Rainey Street is a newer district that came about when
the street was rezoned from a residential neighborhood to a bar district
as a result all the houses on the street turned into bars
and over the past few years
it's actually changed a lot
there's a lot of high-rises now
a lot of the old houses got torn down and built into something else
for example the very first bar I ever went to on the street is now a luxury apartment complex
so it just goes to show how fast Austin is changing
so these four districts are all pretty close to each other you could probably walk between
them if you'd like
or grab a quick cab
in general the nightlife scene in Austin is pretty great
and I'm confident you will find a place you enjoy hanging out
Austin is a city built around things to do outside and depending on what time of
year you come to visit Austin there are many trails, lakes rivers, and
sites to explore.
Here are a few places you should consider checking out
at the edge of downtown, Lady Bird Lake is a perfect place to see the Austin skyline
while being active
regardless of what time of year it is you can trail run,
bike, paddleboard, or kayak around the lake
so we're here at Lady Bird Lake
it's a really beautiful place to come visit
there's a trail that basically runs around the entire thing
so if you're looking for something to do outside
it's a great place to come visit if you just kind of want to take it all in
without exerting too much effort you could always rent a bike and go around
if it's a little bit warmer out today it's actually kind of cold
I'd recommend even renting a kayak or a paddleboard and going around the lake on
on the inside of it
and if you're here when it's a little bit warmer and you
actually want to get in the water and swim around I'd recommend going across
the lake to Barton Creek (Spring) pool where you can actually swim all year round
even if it's cold out
and we're gonna actually go check that out now
Barton Creek pool is a springfed pool that sits at a temperature range between
68 and 74 degrees year-round
the pool is open 5 a.m. to 10:00 p.m.
Friday through Wednesday and if you're coming between November and mid-march
there's no fee to enter the rest of the year there is a small fee to enter of
just a few dollars
As you can see I'm here and I'm cold and people are still swimming
so this is a place your income pretty much any time of the year and swim
like I said the water is always about 68 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit so
definitely a unique place to check out at springfed there's always water in it
and yeah
if you're here during spring or early summer you can also try and find a
spot to swim in the green belt
the green belt is a stretch of land that runs from
Barton Creek pool southwest for about seven miles
This area is amazing to explore
and really fun after a good rain
If you're looking for something outside that
doesn't take a lot of energy to explore you should check out the hope outdoor gallery
we're here at the hope gallery graffiti wall located just outside of downtown Austin
this is actually a graffiti park it's been open since 2011 so I think that's
about six years if my math is correct
You can come here
they have a lot of great pieces of art here
they have a lot of crappy pieces of art here maybe you
can see the newest addition
haha OrcaTrip anyways it's a really great
place to check out with friends you can bring your own spray paint you can make
your own art if you'd like
it is important to note and this kind of goes with the theme of Austin changing
They're tearing this down relatively soon I think
they're going to develop it
but they are moving it to a another location on the east side
and I'll put that address in the description below so
even if this specific location doesn't exist I feel like it's kind of become a tradition
here in Austin to have this exhibit
and so be on the lookout for this park or
the relocation of this park when you're here in town
now that we have covered
outdoor activities let's discuss our last topic
history
Austin is a great place to soak up some history
when you walk the streets it's
hard not to notice all the monuments and statues around
a very popular place to visit in Austin
is the Bullock Museum which aims to tell 'the story of Texas'
it's open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and costs about 9 to 13 dollars to get in
If you're looking to get some history and are trying to avoid paying for it
you should check out the Texas State Capitol
The Capitol is free to visit and
has guided tours about every 30 minutes between 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
on weekdays and has a few tour times during the weekends as well
the tours are a great way to learn about Texas
as well as how the state government functions
so that wraps up our video on what we think makes Austin Austin
